Georgetown University Library –
Collection Development Department: Head of Collection Development, July 2003 to date. Responsible for
coordinating the collection development operations of the Lauinger Library, Woodstock Library, and the Blommer
Science Library. Recommends annual allocations and assists in the monitoring of the library materials budget. Develops
and revises written collection development policies and conspectus. Coordinates and monitors vendor approval plans.
Selects materials in identified subject areas. Evaluates and coordinates the collection development and selection
activities of the library subject specialists and bibliographers. Trains the subject specialists and bibliographers on
collection development practices and procedures. Works with library faculty in designated subject areas. Co-chair of the
Collection Development Council.** Develops cooperative collection development programs with other libraries and
library consortia. Monitors collection development and scholarly publishing trends in research libraries and the
commercial sector.
Acquisitions Department: Head of Acquisitions and Serials, July 1994-June 2003. Responsible for all duties related to
running the Department which consists of 2 librarians, 11 FTE clerks, 3 FTE student assistants. The Department is
divided into three units - a search and order unit, a receiving unit, and a business unit. These duties include personnel
matters, planning, coordinating the work of the units, representing the Department at Management Council, Department
Heads, and Technical Services Council meetings, and negotiation and communication with vendors. Monitor a budget of
nearly $3 million which is split among 33 subject departments and several other funds by form. Currently, there are an
additional 57 endowed funds and 32 special funds. Liaison to the Latin American Studies Program and to the Spanish
Department. Select for the former program.
Acquisitions Department: Acting Head, July 1992-June 1993; Coordinator of Acquisitions, July 1993-June 1994.
Responsible for all duties related to running the Department which consists of 8 FTE clerks, 3 FTE student assistants.

matters, planning, representing the Department at Department Heads and Technical Services Council meetings, and

Acquisitions Department: Assistant Head, 1976 to July 1992. Responsible for supervising the Department (1 & 1/2
other li-brarians, 9 FTE clerks, 4 FTE student assistants) in the absence of the Acquisitions Librarian - I sign the weekly
time sheet, leave slips, and checks emanating from the department; I approve invoices for payment; I handle any
personnel problems which might arise. I supervise other units of the department when the respective supervisors are
absent or the positions are vacant. I give orientation tours for both staff and outside visitors. Daily, responsible for the
Searching Unit (3 clerks, 1 FTE) which pre-order searches the more difficult requests - I provide initial training and
continued guidance and instruction for searchers in the use of various in-house files, to search on OCLC and GEAC
terminals, to search the public catalog, the NUC, etc.; I revise the searchers' work, assure proper funding, and assign
agents; I help prepare each searcher's annual merit evaluation. I set policy and procedures for the unit; advise on and
write new procedures, directives and guidelines for the unit, other units of the department and other departments of the
library. I established routines for GEAC use and was instrumental in adapting the GEAC system for receiving standing
orders at Georgetown. I communicate with faculty selectors about matters of concern in their subject specialties and
select materials for the library in my area of expertise. I supervise the maintenance and claiming of the standing order
file; develop and maintain the Desiderata file and otherwise search for out-of-print materials. I compile monthly and
annual statistics on the work of the unit.
Acquisitions Department: 1973-1975. I processed all gift books received by the Library; revised searches made in the
public catalog and the NUC to verify L.C. main entry and/or card order information. I supervised the searching and
ordering of materials selected from L.C. proof slips. I processed blanket and standing orders and established two
gathering plans for Latin American materials. I organized and ran biannual booksales. I supervised 70 part-time student
assistant hours.
Catalog Department: 1971-1973. Using the Library of Congress classification system and the Anglo-American
cataloging rules, I cataloged Spanish, English and German books in all subjects received by the Library. I revised filing
in the public catalog and shelf list. Supervised filers (20 hours a week).
University of Michigan Libraries Engineering-Transportation Library: 1970-1971, Serials Unit Supervisor. Supervisory responsibility for the recording
and pro-cessing of incoming serials, the claiming of non-received items and the binding of periodicals. Supervised three
part-time employees (1 FTE). Other responsibilities included new title selection, weeding, communication between the
divisional unit and the Serials Section of the Technical Services Dept., reporting changes for inclusion in the Michigan
Union list of scientific and technical serials, corresponding with publishers regarding subscriptions, and the maintenance
of serial related information files. The Engineer-ing-Transportation Library received 3,000 serial titles.
1968-1969. Assigned special project to convert the serial recording card system into a Kardex file system, (five Kardex
units were established).
Medical Center Library: 1966; Library Assistant C-3, responsible for the recording and processing of incoming serials
and for claiming non-received items; 1965, Shelver.
PROFESSIONAL ACTIVITIES:
Indexer for the 1977 and 1978 volumes of the Hispanic American Periodicals Index (HAPI). Indexed five periodicals Bank of London and South America Review, Desarrollo Economico, Journal of Developing Areas, La Palabra y el
Hombre, Revista/review Interamericana.
1979-1981, Assistant Editor of the Consortium of Universities of the Washington Metropolitan Area Union List of
Serials, 4th edition. Duties included research and off-line editing of this computer produced reference tool.
1985, Teller for the 1986/87 USBE officers' election.
1985, Member of the Technical Services Interest Group of the DCLA Planning committee.

Libraries which is on ALCTS Homepage Publications Section at www.ala.org/alcts/publications/asia/tp.html. The
ALCTS Office used this format and coding structure to mount the Book and Serial Vendors for Africa and the Middle
East as well.
