Title of position: Postdoc, TSAP Program Fellow Place of work: Johannesburg, South Africa Job Type: Full time, Regular (Contract period: 2 years) Reports to: TSAP Coordinator Division: Translational Research Division General Description: Typhoid Fever Surveillance in sub-Saharan Africa Program (TSAP) aims at obtaining standardized data on enteric fever disease burden in ten countries in Africa. The IVI is collaborating with the National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) in Johannesburg. The Enteric Diseases Research Unit (EDRU) of the NICD is acting as the reference laboratory for TSAP. The TSAP Program Fellow will be based in Johannesburg, South Africa and reports to the TSAP Coordinator. (S)he and will be responsible for collaborating with the staff of the EDRU to facilitate the logistics managing the TSAP samples stored at the reference laboratory. In addition, (s)he will provide field support to TSAP countries in Africa as needed, which will include frequent travel and prolonged stays in TSAP member countries in sub-Saharan Africa. The incumbent will coordinate all aspects of field collaboration with other IVI scientists and staff in order to benefit the mission and goals of the IVI. Specific Responsibilities: The incumbent will be responsible for 1. liase with the TSAP laboratory coordinator and the head of the EDRU for the organization and shipping and receipt of biological specimen from TSAP countries that will be further investigated in EDRU laboratories. 2. the provision of necessary logistic, technical and managerial support and assisting TSAP sites in the setup/maintenance of field site activities, conduct of health-care utilization surveys, data collection, data management and analysis, reporting, preparation of protocols, documents and standard operating procedures. 3. assisting IVI scientists with drafting manuscripts for the publication of research findings. 4. the provision of support in the planning and implementation of new programs intended to establish and strengthen research capabilities in developing countries, particularly those located in sub-Saharan Africa. 5. performing other tasks as assigned by the Project Coordinator for this and other projects.
