At the beginning of the school year, these readings will be formally assigned, and eventually students will be assessed on the assignments. During the summer, incoming 9th grade honors students will be given an OPTIONAL comprehensive journal assignment, which is designed to help prepare students for greater success in high school. (Additional information regarding this assignment is given to students during 9th-grade registration). The purposes for these assignments are to increase academic rigor by: improving reading fluency and comprehension; exercising critical thinking skills; fostering self-motivation; honing study habits; and, sharpening communication skills. We recommend that you purchase copies of the books so that you can underline significant passages related to conflict, theme, climax, irony, characterization, etc. If you prefer not to buy the books, check them out, either from AHS’s library, or from the public library.
