Mr. Matthew Growden, a prominent resident of White township died on Thursday afternoon [28 July 1904] of injuries resulting from a fall sustained two weeks ago. Mr. Growden had been working in the hay field on July 26 and was thrown from the hay wagon while it was hauled to the barn. The internal injuries received that day were followed by complications and pneumonia which caused his death. The deceased was aged 72 years, and his death was expected owing to his advanced age and the nature of the injuries. His wife and the following children survive him: Thomas, Collins and William Growden, Mrs. Susan Hubert, Mrs. Ella Humm and Miss Martha Growden. The funeral services were held on Saturday morning and interment was made in Greenwood." A graduate of Indiana State Teachers College now IUP, he taught in Jefferson County and Indiana County schools. He was an agent for the Nationwide Insurance Company, retiring in 1961. Mr. Williams had traveled in the southwest and had a "rock shop" and "rock jewelry" for several years. A veteran of World War I, he had served in the U.S. Army.
