19. Jazz Cerkno 2014
international festival
It is probably difficult to find an artistic expression that has so many different definitions
as jazz. There are quite some connoisseurs who expose its nomadic nature, since many
jazz musicians often leave their domestic land and seek inspiration in the new
homelands. Such practices are the rule rather than the exception, and in a metaphoric
way are also present at a local level, where domestic musicians in a nomadic way move
from one band to another, with genre classifications of those bands as various as
possible. At the Jazz Cerkno festival, we like to hear exactly such colourful and versatile
music that arises in the creative clash of diverse cultures and histories. It would be hard
to find such a variety of music in one place as at this year Jazz Cerkno festival program.
Here in Cerkno you could hear a wide range of approaches and poetics: from big band
renditions of Balkan music, through offbeat pairings of jazz and art rock, reggae, funk, or
noise on the one hand, and the classical music, atmospheric soundtracks and Brazilian
rhythms on the other, all the way to the enigmatic spontaneous improvisations, which are
one of the pillars of joyous jazz music in the first place. All jazz roads lead to Cerkno!
There will be a “big bang” already on the opening festival day, since we will host Slovenian drummer
Žan Tetičkovič and his complex project "OASIS", which will be carried out by the Big Band RTV
Slovenia as well as many international and Slovenian guests, who will help Tetičkovič in his vision of
big band jazz combined with Balkan melodies and rhythms: Theodosii Spassov (kaval), Vlatko
Stefanovski (guitar), Filip Novosel (tambura), Marko Črnčec (piano) and Marko Nikolić (bass). The
Big Band will be conducted by Tadej Tomšič. Tradition, this time from jazz history, is also an inherent
part of the international quartet Peeping Tom’s music. The band tackles bebop, but boldly mould it
through the prism of free improvisation. The first festival day will be rounded off with the unpredictable
Slovenian band Žoambo Žoet Workestrao with an eclectic mixture of most diverse genres, from
hardcore and noise through art rock, all the way to traditional music and jazz. The first Friday concert
will be started with the legend of modern improvised bass, an American living in France, Barre Phillips,
who will perform with his trio EMIR A3, which plays spontaneously composed music, built from a
collective memory and immediate discoveries. After that, another bassist, the Slovenian Robert Jukič,
will reinvent his last year's conceptual album Life, where a variety of genres from jazz to pop to opera is
found, in a more concentrated form designed for his international trio Robert Jukič "LIFE". And the
Dutch band Naked Wolf will take care for the energetic second festival day's finale with a combination
of genres in which jazz improvisation have an exposed place, but in their multilayered texture there are
glimpses of alternative and psychedelic rock, world music and noise, too. The final day will begin with
the morning concert by music workshop participants led by mentors Blaž Celarec and Boštjan
Gombač, and the legendary Barre Phillips will play at the traditional afternoon solo concert at the
music school. The evening will start with Rob Mazurek and his trio São Paulo Underground, playing
multilayered music ranging from percussive postbop through postrock to the Sun Ra cosmic noise. After
that, we will listen to the Norwegian double bass player Eivind Opsvik (living in the United States) and
his band "Overseas IV " that combines old and new sounds, from lush baroque to atmospheric film
music. The exploding grand finale will be in hands of mighty DKV Trio from Chicago and their highly
energetic music that combines modern jazz with funky grooves and bits of rock, reggae and other
genres.
The festival's varied program is rounded off with a series of accompanying events: apart from the
already mentioned music workshop, there will be the "Wild food" workshop with Dario Cortese,
music photography exhibition by photographer Jože Svetičič, and a round table / podcast led by Nova
Muska music magazine. And we engaged the Kar Češ Brass Band to lift the general mood with their
spontaneous concerts on the streets of Cerkno, playing white-hot versions of New Orleans and other
groovy music.
