20. Jazz Cerkno 2015 international festival 21.-23. may www.jazzcerkno.si info@jazzcerkno.si In the year 20 after the Jazz, Boštjan Cvek, the founder and driving force of the international Jazz Cerkno festival, ended his life. Before he passed away he prepared complete program for this year's festival, and, as if nothing had happened, took care that the festival will continue to take place. This year's round anniversary of Jazz Cerkno is dedicated to Boštjan Cvek's life circle, which can be touched as a tangent by every visitor of this year's festival as well as those about to come. Dario Cortese Yes, it's been twenty years since jazz tunes began to echo through this town for the first time. Apart from jazz musicians, we have strived to invite those musicians who combine jazz with other genres - from edgy rock to gentle traditional music -, those who experiment and improvise. We understand jazz as an extremely wide and open art form, which is precisely why it can be local and global at the same time. The mixture of local and global is also one of the main momentums of our festival, since it is shaped by both artists coming from all corners of the planet, and by the citizens of Cerkno as well as other locals. In the past nineteen years in Cerkno we heard a series of local and foreign eminent musicians who, each in their own right, represented the current moment of Slovenian and inernational jazz. And this year it will be no different, except that we have prepared some goodies and special features for the anniversary. For the first time in Cerkno we are going to host the famous guitarist Marc Ribot who is considered to be one of the most original and versatile guitarists. Ribot is one of the most idiosyncratic guitarists. Apart from having his own bands, he has a rich history of high-profile collaborations, from Tom Waits through Elvis Costello to Henry Grimes and John Zorn, skillfully tackling a wide range of genres, from pop and folk to jazz and improvisation. It's hard to find a better proof for this than the Marc Ribot's Ceramic Dog trio and its edgy alternative rock with elements of punk, jazz, experiment and more. Ribot's band will conclude up the festival events on Friday, when in the Old Square we will listen also to another specialty: the Slovenian-Italian Cerkno Jubileum Orchestra, a modern big band, led by Zlatko Kaučič. In fact, this is the renowned orchestra Without Borders / Senza confini which will be renamed and renewed with some new musicians in honor of the festival anniversary. The Friday festival day will be rounded off with the energetic CanadianBritish trio Carrier / Edwards / Lambert. On the opening day on Thursday we will kick off with a Slovenian Big band GveriLLaz and its jazz arrangements of the legendary Frank Zappa songs. This will be followed by trumpeter Igor Matković and three pianists. The Polish pianist Marcin Wasilewski (Tomasz Stanko's long-time collaborator) is a member of Matković's Slovenian-Polish-Serbian quartet "Long Distance Journey", that will premiere some new music in Cerkno. And then, for the first time in our festival's history, there will be two pianos on the stage. They will be played by legends of improvisation Alexander von Schlippenbach and Aki Takase. As usual, the final Saturday festival day will offer an additional concert at the Music School. We will listen to the legendary Japanese free jazz reed player Akira Sakata on his first performance in Slovenia. At the main stage, Sakata will also play in the furious free-form Japanese-Swedish-Norwegian trio Sakata / Berthling / Nilssen-Love. There will be another trio on the same evening, Agnel / Edwards / Noble; this Franco-British company will bring improvisation to a more abstract level. Members are Sophie Agnel at the piano, drummer Steve Noble and bass player John Edwards (the latter will play the day before in the Canadian saxophonist François Carrier trio. The grand finale of our anniversary festival is going to be very bombastic. We will listen to our old acquaintances, the edgy Dutch avant-rockers The Ex, this time accompanied by two excellent guests. Ken Vandermark needs no introduction, as we have hosted him several times, most recently last year with the DKV Trio (that concert was included in their live, 5-CD album Sound In Motion In Sound, a set of five cds with just so many concert recordings)! And the other guest, the trumpeter Nate Wooley, is considered one of the most revolutionary contemporary trumpeters in recent years. So, from May 21 to 23 there is quite a delicious jazz treat waiting for you in Cerkno with many local and foreign musicians. As always, we offer favorable jazz packages at Hotel Cerkno to our visitors. Music events at the annversary festival will be enriched with street performances by Kar Češ Brass Band and Cerkno Wind Orchestra. These performances are part of our rich accompanying program, which will be a bit more spectacular for the anniversary. We would like to highlight the documentary exhibition "Twenty years of jazz - and much more - in Cerkno" (prepared by Miha Zadnikar with numerous collaborators). There is also our traditional music workshop for children, this time titled "Sound Safari - Cerkno 2015" (led by our two regular mentors, Boštjan Gombač and Blaž Celarec, and Boštjan Perovšek), New Muska magazine will held a round table "How creative musician works?", which will be moderated by Ičo Vidmar, and we will round off a bunch of accompanying events with two constants of our festival: music photography workshop "Jazzy-ga!" (Žiga Koritnik) and "Wild Food" workshop (Dario Cortese). Prick up your ears and see ya on the Old Square! It will be lively, for each and everyone of you.
