This is a required course for the Registered Health Informatics Administrator
(RHIA) option in the new master of science in Health Informatics and Information
Management (MS HIIM) degree. It covers curricular components required for
eligibility to sit for the RHIA examination defined by the Commission on
Accreditation for Health Informatics and Information Management (CAHIIM).

6460. Classification Systems (3) P: BIOL 2130/2131 or equivalent, HIMA 3000 or
equivalent, HIMA 3113 and 3118 or equivalent, COHE 6000, HIMA 6060; or
consent of instructor. Coding of diseases and procedures by “International
Classification of Diseases” and services and procedures according to the Healthcare
Common Procedure Coding System for reimbursement.

Upon completion of the course, the student will be able to:
1. Discuss the roles of different organizations in the development and revision of
ICD-9\-CM and the development and future revisions of ICD-10.
2. Practice AHIMA’s Standards for Ethical Coding.
3. Justify the purposes of the ICD-9-CM.
4. Contrast “nomenclature" and "classification".

5. Distinguish formats in coding diseases and procedures.
6. Interpret uniform abbreviations, guidelines, punctuation marks, and other
conventions specific to ICD-9-CM and ICD-10.
7. Contrast principal diagnosis, principal procedure, complication, and
comorbidity.
8. Evaluate the impact ICD-9-CM coding can have on an acute care facility’s
billing and collection of data for other purposes.
9. Compare assigning ICD-9-CM codes manually and when using an Encoder.
10. Differentiate the coding systems currently in use.
11. Apply Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System (HCPCS) in clinical
coding.
