SMOKING POLICY The Chief Medical Officer has stated that smoking is harmful to health. 1. All North Star Vessels must create “a smoking area” within the confines of the vessels accommodation area. 2. In the case of vessels with larger than normal accommodation, clean and “working” smoking areas should be established 3. Where two or more mess/ lounge areas exist, ONE should be designated and marked “SMOKING AREA”. All other areas should be clearly marked with “NO SMOKING” signs 4. Smoking is prohibited in all bunks. 5. Smoking in cabins is no longer permitted. 6. Smoking during meetings (Safety meetings/ Exercise debriefs etc) is not in the general interest and must not be allowed. 7. In vessels where segregation is difficult for reasons of size and lack of suitable facilities, smoking during meal times is expressly forbidden, and smoking at all other times should be by mutual consent. 8. Smoking in non-smoking areas is forbidden. The application of this policy rests with the Master. …………………………………………. Callum Bruce Managing Director North Star Shipping All Masters North Star Fleet 28 March 2005 Gentlemen, Subject: North Star Shipping Smoking Policy By production of the attached North Star Shipping “Smoking Policy”, the Company is making it clear to all onboard that the health of seafarers is at the forefront of Company thinking. It also brings the seagoing section of the Company in line with the rest of the Company (Craig Group) where a total ban on smoking within Company premises has been in force for some time. Once the Smoking Area has been nominated, ALL other areas onboard will, by default, become No Smoking areas. Signs to this effect should be ordered and strategically placed throughout the vessel. The policy enclosed with this letter will, upon receipt, come into force with immediate effect, and it is expected that the policy will be enforced by the vessels Masters.
