Smoking During Pregnancy

If you smoke during pregnancy, you are not only putting your own life at risk, through heart disease or cancer, but that of your unborn child

You may suffer:

 An ectopic pregnancy

 A miscarriage

 Premature labour

 Placental abruption

 Vaginal bleeding

Babies born to women who smoke may:

 Have a lower birth weight which is one of the main causes of illness and disability in babies.

Stop smoking in early pregnancy and produce a baby with a healthy birth weight

 Suffer a cot death – the likelihood of this is directly linked to the number of cigarettes you smoke

 Affect your child’s mental development and behaviour, leading to a short attention span and hyperactivity

 Have a cleft lip and palate

 Be stillborn

Stopping smoking can be tough especially when the cravings hit, so you’ll probably need help.
