Anti - Litter Policy January 2013 Introduction At McKinney Primary School we aim to have no litter on the school premises. This policy outlines: 1. What equipment we have for collecting waste 2. How we encourage and teach the pupils to use the bins 3. Actions that will be taken if there is litter on the school premises. 1. Equipment Indoors – all classrooms have: a fruit and vegetable waste bin a bin for non – recycle items a blue recycle bin. Blue Recycle Bins YES PLEASE NO THANKS Aerosols (empty aerosols) Mixed glass Cardboard (dry and clean) Plastic bags Plastic bottles (clean, squashed with no tops) Wallpaper Food and drink cans (dry and clean) Envelopes Newspapers and magazines (dry and clean) Foil Telephone directories and catalogues Shredded paper Greeting cards Plastic cartons and trays Paperback books Polystyrene Hardback books (without cover) Outdoors – we have: two Billy Bin-it Litter bins two fruit and vegetable waste bins (upper and lower playgrounds) a black litter bin (front of school) two litter pickers. 2. Education During a whole school assembly in September pupils from the Eco-Committee will show all pupils the three bins and explain which waste products go into each. There are posters displayed around the school to encourage pupils and parents to put their rubbish into the bin. Throughout the year the pupils will be reminded of the importance of using the bins correctly. 3. Action If a pupil sees a piece of litter they should inform a member of staff. If it is safe to do so, the pupil will be allowed to get one of the litter pickers and put the litter into the bin. If required, the pupils will do a litter pick using the litter pickers and gloves. (Health and safety – pupils should always wash their hands after they have picked up litter.)
