Israel/Occupied Palestinian
Territories
On the 3rd of June, using the rhetoric of
“war against terrorism”, the Sharon
government has reoccupied Palestinian
cities. Despite the fact that the previous
military campaign, which resulted in a
worldwide outcry, did not manage to stop
terrorist attacks, the same “medicine” of
violence, occupation and destruction, is
applied again. While condemning all
attacks against civilians from both sides,
CamSAW believes that the continued
occupation and the everyday misery
inflicted on the Palestinian people is a
major cause of the insecurity faced by the
state of Israel, and the continuing offensives
only lead to the loss of more innocent lives.
Afghanistan
After a high profile bombing campaign and
support for regional warlords, the ground
battles taking place in Afghanistan have
received in comparison little attention by
the media. While a puppet regime is set-up
in a background of human rights abuses,
11.000 foreign troops from 17 countries are
still present on the ground, fighting an
increasingly invisible enemy. While
condemning all attacks against civilians,
CamSAW believes that the ill-defined
notion of ‘terrorist’ and the impact, both
military and political, that the continuing
campaign has, is only creating a more
dangerous world order.

Iraq
Kashmir
Despite the continuing bombing campaign
for the last decade, and the inhuman
sanctions that have left half a million Iraqi
children dead, Western leaders are looking
for excuses to start a new major war in the
region, tagging the whole country as part of
an imaginary ‘axis of evil’. After
marginalizing dissident voices in the UN,
and undermining arms inspection programs,
the United States, supported by Britain,
tries to convince their allies to participate in
yet another conflict. While having no
sympathy for Saddam Hussein’s regime,
CamSAW does not see another war as a
solution to any political conflict.
Democracy in Iraq shall prevail only when
the preconditions for civil society to
emancipate itself are present. Sanctions,
bombings and war are a step towards the
exact opposite direction.
The rhetoric of ‘war against terrorism’ has
only inflamed matters in the disputed
region of Kashmir, with the Indian
government
accusing
the
Pakistani
government of helping armed Kashmiri
factions. As foreign citizens are being
evacuated because of fears of a nuclear
conflict, and the international diplomatic
attempts have failed to cool down the
tension, it has become clear that the
conflicts in the nearby region had an
explosive influence. While taking no sides
in the conflict, CamSAW believes that the
possession of nuclear weapons by India,
Pakistan and all other countries, is illegal as
they are weapons of indiscriminate and
mass
destruction.
Furthermore
the
continuing supply of British conventional
weapons to both India and Pakistan is
irreconcilable with any definition of an
‘ethical foreign policy’.

‘Cambridge Students Against the War’ is a
coalition of students from universities and
colleges around Cambridge brought together by
the belief that a violent response to an act of
violence will not make the world a safer place
for anyone. Observing that the ‘war against
terrorism’ has been highjacked around the
world (in Israel/Palestine, Afghanistan, Iraq,
Kashmir…) to justify all sorts of violence, we
came to the conclusion that it is being used, by
all concerned parties, as yet another construct to
further domination by military means. In
practice war, by destroying people’s living,
only feeds terrorism, and is used domestically
to justify militarism and a backlash on civil
liberties.
