BOOK REPORT REQUIREMENTS FOR THIRD GRADE – 2015/2016 Each student is required to read a book and prepare a written or oral book report for each book according to the schedule below. The books chosen should be an appropriate reading ability and interest. Each book should be one continuous story not several short stories in one book, except for the non-fiction assignment. The average length of each book should be at least 45 pages, unless otherwise stated. Each book must be approved by Mrs. Harper. Parents, I strongly recommend that your child read the majority of each book aloud. Encouraging your child to read smoothly, use good expression, and understand clearly what is being read is one of the best gifts you can give them. It is also helpful to write a brief summary at the end of each chapter, to help recall important parts of the story. Your child is more apt to enjoy reading if you enjoy it with them. (We understand that this is difficult but well worth the effort.) The written and oral book report forms are to be kept in the Homework section of your binder. Please follow specific directions for each report. It is your responsibility to get books approved on time as well as complete book reports on time. The first book should be approved by Thursday, September 3. DUE DATES: OCTOBER 7 BIOGRAPHY - ORAL NOVEMBER 5 FICTION - MYSTERY - WRITTEN FORM DECEMBER 10 ANIMAL OR NATURE STORY - ORAL JANUARY 21 ADVENTURE - WRITTEN FORM MARCH 3 YOUR CHOICE - ORAL APRIL 7 NON FICTION - WRITTEN FORM THIRD GRADE ORAL BOOK REPORT REQUIREMENTS Tell the title and author of the book you have read. Briefly describe the main characters (limit to two or three). Tell what the story was about by briefly highlighting events in the beginning, middle, and end of the story. Tell what your favorite part of the story was and why you liked it. Prepare a visual aide about your book. It can be a colorful picture you have drawn, a shadow box, a model, etc. Speak clearly – avoid repeating words such as “uh” or “and”. Speak with expression and loud enough for all to hear. Stand correctly. Try not to wiggle around, and keep your hands to your side. Look at your audience. Keep report between two and three minutes. Note cards are fine, but do not read them. Use them as clue words to help you remember things to include in your report and to help keep your thoughts organized. Practice saying your report out loud. Perhaps your parents or brother or sister will listen to you. If not, try the dog. You may wish to practice in front of a mirror or record your voice to practice on your own. Be sure to time yourself. COME WELL PREPARED TO DO YOUR BEST !
