"I want to help create products and services that people truly need, and will enjoy using. The continuing
development of my skills in C++, Java and Python, gained over the past three years, together with my strong
communication skills, quick learning capability and high attention to detail, will help me deliver on that aim."
CURRENT POSITION
Since January 2004: programmer, web developer, researcher and lecturer
within Liisa Holm’s Structural Genomics Group at the Institute of
Biotechnology, University of Helsinki, Finland. http://www.holmgroup.org
MAJOR ACHIEVEMENTS
Single-handed redesign of the Holm Group website, developing a
corporate template, and implementing changeover from Tomcat to Zope
application servers. This involved large-scale script translation and
migration, creation of new web interfaces, and full configuration (security,
proxies, logging, etc) of both the Zope back-end and Apache front-end.
SKILLS & RESPONSIBILITIES
Research Projects
Programming and data-processing roles in a number of ongoing projects,
including a modular, hierarchical evolutionary protein classification system,
and the Global Trace Graph for remote homology search, fold assignment
and transitive alignment. PubMed: 16390875, 15608174.
Web Development
Maintenance of group website and application servers. Development of
web applications (GTG, Pfam2, SolvX, Dali), involving linking databases,
external applications and scripts with custom web interfaces. Development
and maintenance of the group’s automated server for both CASP6 and
CASP7 protein structure prediction competitions.
Programming & Software
Good knowledge and experience of object-oriented C++, Java and Python,
Perl, shellscripts, SQL, XHTML, CSS and XML; experience with MySQL
and Linux administration, database and software updates, and pipelines;
extensive knowledge of a wide range of bioinformatics tools, office
software and graphical packages, within Linux and Windows OS.
Teaching
Design, preparation and presentation of lectures, demonstrations and
exercise sessions for courses on protein structure and function, for
students and researchers at the University of Helsinki.

PREVIOUS WORK EXPERIENCE
Oct 2000 - Oct 2002
Medical Technician in Academic Oncology at Nottingham University,
developing vaccines for colorectal cancer and osteosarcoma, and testing
in Stage2 clinical trials. Communicating research ideas and progress within
and outside the vaccine group, patient sample prep, cell culture, blots,
PCR, antibody production, flow cytometry, cell cloning.
PubMed: 15798769.
Oct 1999 - Jan 2000
Conservation expedition in Tanzania. Performed biological and sociological
surveys on river, plains, in forest and savannah. Living under canvas, the
group had to cooperate in order to cope with the harsh African wilderness.
Jan 1999 - Feb 1999
Travelled alone to Costa Rica to work in a cloudforest reserve, extending
and mapping the trail system. Also some Spanish translation work.
Nov 1996 - Nov 1998
Research Technician in Genetics at Nottingham University, involving: fly
culture, design and implementation of assays, electrophoresis and PCR,
demonstrating, supervising and leading student project work.
INTERESTS & OTHER SKILLS
Sports & Fitness
Cycling: In June 1999, I covered 1000+ miles in 13 days, from the most
northerly to southerly points of British mainland. I also enjoy mountain
biking. Climbing: mostly bouldering and leading. I like to work out and stay
active, and I have played for various badminton and frisbee teams.
Miscellaneous
I hold full, clean car and motorcycle licences. I enjoy a variety of music
including jazz, latin, disco, anything funky. I like photography, cooking,
playing pool, and riding and tinkering with my bikes. I am learning Karate
and T’ai Chi. I am an amateur firebreather.
