ESRAD 2014 HELSINKI WWW.EUROPEADULTDEVELOPMENT.ORG Practical Things for Presenters and Attenders Biennial ESRAD Conference in Helsinki, Finland, May 21-23, 2014 Dear ESRAD colleagues, welcome to Helsinki in the midst of spring and almost summer! Here is the latest information about the practical issues of the conference. VENUE: The House of Science and Letters (Tieteiden Talo) Kirkkokatu 6, 00170 Helsinki +358 (0)9 228 69 265 http://www.tieteidentalo.fi/ This beautiful building was designed by architect Elsa Arokallio in the 1920's. The House of Science and Letters is administered by the Federation of Finnish Learned Societies, which has their premises in the building. The original Nordic Classicism of the building was honored when it was renovated in 1997 with up-to-date meeting and office facilities. The House of Science and Letters has five floors and ten meetings rooms of various kinds. Each of the floors and the assembly hall can be accessed by lift. The café Tiedekahvila operates in the same premises and provides catering services for meetings. On weekdays parking is available in shopping center Kluuvi, about a 10-minute walking distance from the House of Science and Letters. PRE-REGISTRATION - OBLIGATORY TO EVERY ATTENDER: Please fill the following short questionnaire regarding conference lunches, coffee and dinner here. You must pre-registrate yourself to workshop (there are places for 36 persons in maximum in the workshop). Also pre-registration is also needed for the main conference (there are maximum of 80 places in total). Registration is only complete after you also pay conference fee (=ESRAD membership fee), see below. REGISTRATION AT THE CONFERENCE PLACE: The registration desk is nearby the room 505 at venue, and will be open before Wednesday’s workshop and on Thursday. Please get your conference materials from there. If you are 1 ESRAD 2014 HELSINKI attending without a presentation, please bring the receipt of paid conference fee with you. Unfortunately we are not able to deliver cash, so please make the payment via internet before. PRE-CONFERENCE WORKSHOP: ESRAD 2014 is organizing one workshop on Wednesday. We are proud to be able to announce the following workshop: Wednesday, May 21., 2014, 12.00-16.00 room 505: Prof Michael Commons, Prof Patricia Miller and Dr Kristian Stålne MHC, Model of Hierarchical Complexity workshop (with coffee break, served at cafe for participant’s own charge) The space is limited to 36 persons in workshop. There is obligatory pre-registration to workshop, see above. Please note you need laptop. In the workshop, there will be theoretical introduction and teaching program, worked through with laptops. MAIN CONFERENCE FORMATS: Presentations and keynotes will be held at room 505. Poster sessions will be in the foyer nearby 505). Keynotes. We are very proud to announce that Professors Andreas Demetriou(Cyprus) and Jarkko Hautamäki (Helsinki) will give keynotes. Paper sessions are oral presentations of three to four papers, followed by a question-andanswer discussion. Timing: paper sessions are scheduled for one hour, normally with three presenters, each with approximately 15 minutes for their presentation, and 5 minutes for discussion. Room set-up: large seminar room with computer and data projector. There are 20 paper presentations (involving 41 scholars and students in total, including all names involved in presentations). Please bring your presentation as a Powerpoint file on a memory stick. Interactive poster sessions 6 posters, visually presenting research studies, with the maximum size 70 cm x 100 cm. A short oral presentation of about 5 for each poster is given to an audience gathered as a group. After the authors’ brief presentation, an in-depth discussion between them and the audience follows. The Poster sessions offer researchers the chance to present their work in a visual format and offer more opportunities for interaction and discussion. Timing: poster sessions are scheduled for one and a half hours, following the format above. Room set-up: foyer with wall space to display posters. Materials for fixing posters to the wall will be provided. Please bring also handouts, if you will. SOCIAL PROGRAM: The social program is a vital part of the ESRAD Conference. Get-together meeting on Wednesday, May 21st, will be held at the conference venue. Light refreshments will be served. Cost of party is involved in the conference fee. Dinner will be on Thursday, May 22, from 7pm onwards. The place will be informed in registration as you come to conference. Please note that the cost of the dinner is not involved in the conference fee. Lunches and coffees are included in the conference fee and served on the 5th floor (Note: except coffee on Wednesday’s pre-workshop). 2 ESRAD 2014 HELSINKI Given that Conference is short and intensive, Saturday and Sunday will be the main opportunity to explore Helsinki and the surrounding area.
