Minutes Multicultural Council 10 February 2005 1. Self-introductions. 12 people attended. See list below. 2. The minutes from the 27 January 2004 meeting were approved as written. 3. Sonya presented a draft multicultural calendar and a list of other possible events that could be added (see below). The consensus was that the Council should strive to have one event per month, and that we should reach out to city groups, especially when the university is not in session. Suggestions were made for events to add: a Jewish event and a Chinese event. 4. Tony reported on the idea that we should support diversity training through events that focus on the classroom. For example, Professor Orman is having a guest speaker in her diversity and gender class March 30, so she will move the class to a larger place and invite the campus to participate. The Council could strive to have 2-3 such events each semester, in a variety of disciplines. This approach would integrate diversity training into what we do: education. The Council agreed. 5. Tony stated that he has invited Jane Fraser and Bill Thomas from the Multicultural Council to participate in the Diversity Planning Committee. 6. In the absence of the chair (who had car troubles that day), there was only brief discussion of the agenda item “Request from Gen Ed Board for a joint meeting to discuss what ‘cross cultural’ means in General Education.” Jane will follow up with the Gen Ed Board chair (Paul Chacon). The next meeting is 24 February 2005, 3:30-5 pm in OUC 003. Attendance: Bob Armendariz Joyce Archuletta Roseanne B.D.
