CAREER PATHWAYS
Technical/Vocational training schools offer a wide variety of job training options in areas such as cosmetology,
mechanical and automotive repair, paralegal services, travel services, secretarial, and medical assistance. The typical
academic preparation vocational courses are short, lasting from five to 12 months, although some training programs can
take up to two or three years to complete. Check for accredited schools at accsc.org or mystudentedge.com.
Community colleges generally offer two-year studies with an Associate’s degree conferred upon completion. This
coursework usually prepares people for a technical occupation and includes occupational, general education, and
elective. Many community colleges have transfer agreements with four-year post-secondary institutions for students to
continue their education. Use free nvcis.intocareers.org site or bigfuture.collegeboard.org.
Colleges and universities offer undergraduate (4 yrs and graduate programs leading to a Bachelor’s, Master’s, or
Doctoral degree. Use free nvcis.intocareers.org site or bigfuture.collegeboard.org.
Today's military is more advanced technologically and offers many more high-tech occupations than in the past. There
are over 4,100 different job paths from pharmacy to journalism to electronics. That means military service people often
enter the private sector as experienced and highly sought-after candidates. Check out opportunities at military.com.
Apprenticeship is known as the other four-year degree. Apprenticeship is a highly flexible training model that combines
on-the-job learning with related classroom instruction, whereby paid employees receive technical and practical training in
highly-skilled occupations. Apprentices enter into agreements with a program sponsor, which may be an employee
association, employer, or employer group. The program sponsor assumes the responsibility of training, which includes
working and learning under a mentor. Apprentices often earn college credit through their apprenticeship program.
Check out Nevada programs @ http://laborcommissioner.com/apprenticeship.html.
Industry-recognized credentials are often used to meet the specific needs of business and industry and help to assist
employees in meeting certification requirements for their job. Certificate programs show that a person has completed
coursework in a focused area of study.
COLLEGEBOUND CLASSES (Admissions tips)
The first thing college admissions officers look at is your transcript. They want to know that you're taking a
broad mix of classes and challenging yourself academically. A strong college-prep program includes a mix of subjects:
English: four years; Math: three or four years; Foreign language: two or three years; Science: three or four years
(two lab sciences); Social studies: three or four years
Did you push yourself to fit an extra class into a full course load? Colleges consider extra courses on a high
school transcript a sign of a motivated student. Does your high school offer honors or Advanced Placement
courses? Admissions committees count the number of advanced courses you have taken. The more, the better–
assuming, of course, that you earn at least a B.
Colleges examine your academic record very closely. Admissions committees look for:
An upward trend in grades
Junior-year grades are very important, and improvement will be noticed. A student who did not perform well in the
freshman year of high school may be given the benefit of the doubt if his or her grades went up in sophomore, junior,
and senior years.
The academic quality of your high school
Admissions committees will look at the availability of honors or Advanced Placement courses, the school's overall
academic strength, and the past success of students from the same high school.
Your class rank or GPA
As the dean of admission at Wesleyan University says, "You're better off getting an A in calculus than writing the
perfect essay on the application."
SAT I/ACT/SAT II scores
Standardized test scores are the only nationwide measuring tool for college bound students. However, the tests are
not the most important element of your application. In fact, some schools do not look at the scores at all (fairtest.org).
Required course work for a specialized major. Are you applying to the engineering or nursing school? There may be
different requirements, such as extra math or science courses. Some majors may require a specific class be taken each
semester each year or in a certain sequence. Be sure to call each school to find out the requirements.
A solid senior year
Don't think that you can coast as soon as your applications are finished. Colleges will notice if you drop an AP course
or take an easy schedule.
Application Steps
Apply to schools checking application deadlines, apply for scholarships, get the FAFSA PIN for student and one
parent in December. Complete the online FAFSA as soon as possible between January and February. Get SARS
report and fix issues. Follow through with schools to make sure application packages are complete. Federal aid money
is distributed on first come first served basis. School regular decision letters arrive usually March and April. You decide
which school to attend by May 1st.
