JASNA Web Site Report (www.jasna.org)
Submitted September 7, 2008 by Carol Medine Moss, JASNA Web Site Manager
AGM Publications
In June, JASNA launched a new feature of the website, a section dedicated to publications
written for and distributed at AGMs. The first publication was His Cunning or Hers by June
Menzies with illustrations by Juliet McMaster. This collection of letters from Penelope Clay
and William Walter Elliot was written for the 1993 AGM in Lake Louise and has been out of
print ever since.
In August 2008, In Defense of Mrs. Elton, by Diana Birchall with illustrations by Juliet
McMaster, was published. In Defense Mrs. Elton was first released for the 1999 AGM in
Colorado Springs.
Maps of the Novels
In August, another new feature was added to the JASNA website. This new section of the
website features maps of England, one for each novel. It shows both the fictional and actual
locations in Austen’s novels. Many thanks to the Jane Austen Society of Australia for
permission to reproduce the maps from their publication Where’s Where in Jane Austen . . . and
What Happens There.
Austen Films
One of the most popular sections of the JASNA website continues to be the pages on film
adaptations of the novels as well as other productions related to Austen. These pages were
updated frequently in the past year as the Masterpiece Theatre productions were released as well
as two Austen films – Lost in Austen and Miss Austen Regrets. Each film page contains links to
essays in Persuasions On-Line, Book Reviews, and winning essays from the Essay Contest when
the subject is related to film adaptations. In addition, other articles written on the films are
linked including two added this year by Elizabeth Philosophos Cooper on Charles Thomas Haden
and Brook Edward Bridges, people in Austen’s life featured in Miss Austen Regrets.
RSS Feed
JASNA’s web site continues to support a RSS (Really Simple Syndication) feed. JASNA's RSS
feed allows you to receive notification in your RSS-capable browser or other RSS-capable
software each time our site is updated. The latest version of Microsoft's Internet Explorer and
Apple Safari both support RSS feeds. The RSS feed also can be added to My Yahoo, My AOL
and other like services.
Regions
Regional Events page, launched last year by Iris Lutz, continues to be popular. It highlights
upcoming events in the JASNA regions as well as recaps recent events. General maintenance to
the list of regions and regional coordinators continued. As JASNA regions create their own web
pages, the main JASNA site posts links to these regional sites.
Annual General Meetings
JASNA’s web site features pages for all AGMs between 1996 (Richmond) and 2010 (Portland).
This year saw lots of updates on the Chicago pages and some on the Philadelphia pages.
Book Reviews
Thanks to Margo Goia and Lee Ridgeway, all book reviews from JASNA News issues for this
past year are posted on the web site.
Persuasions On-Line
Persuasions On-Line Volume 28, Number 1 was published in December, 2007 with 16 essays.
In April, 2008, Persuasions On-Line Volume 28, Number 2 was published. This was a special
issue of Persuasions, devoted to essays on “Global Jane Austen.” It included film clips from
Austen adaptations, the first time clips have been used in Persuasions On-Line.
Renee Charron scanned all the essays from out-of-print Persuasions Number 10 and Lee
Ridgeway scanned and enhanced all the images. This was published in February, 2008. Many
thanks to both for such tireless work and a job well done. Renee and Lee are now working on
Persuasions Number 9.
Essay Contest
The eighth essay contest was completed and winners were announced. Winning essays were
posted.
Merchandise
JASNA’s web site continues to support a page for regional organizations to post Jane Austen
merchandise for sale. Currently, this includes Southern Arizona, Washington DC, Minnesota,
Greater New York, Oregon/SW Washington, Eastern Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin.
Web Site Host Change
In December, 2007, JASNA left Interland, our old Internet hosting service. Their service had
slipped noticeably and, even more important, the web site statistics they offered had become less
complete than in past years. In spite of many conversations with Interland Customer Service, it
became clear the situation wasn't going to improve. After some consultations with the Web Site
Committee, JASNA moved to Webhost4life. Our website traffic statistics are now complete –
we can see visitor counts on every pages of our website and improved summary traffic reporting.
See examples of this at the end of this report.

Financials, Disk and Email usage
Webhost4life, JASNA’s Internet Service Provider, charges $8.95 per month for 1024 MB of disk
space, and 25 email accounts. The charge is due for a year of service ($107.40), paid in
advance. JASNA paid $107.40 in December, 2007. Our next bill will come in December, 2008
and should be the same $107.40. We are currently using 146.2 MB of disk space, up from 75.2
MB last year. We are also using three email addresses: webmaster@jasna.org, info@jasna.org
and members-canada@jasna.org. JASNA owns the Internet domain jasna.org. We purchased 9
years of use in 2001 for $179 (back then, the going rate was $35 per year). In 2010, we need to
buy to rights to jasna.org again.
Statistics
Webhost4life provides statistics on how visitors get to JASNA’s website. Over half of our
