Sketching Vectors Addition and Subtraction.
Use a separate sheet, protractor, and ruler to solve the following using the graphical
method. Graph paper is helpful.
Solve the following using graphical method. Given the following vectors find the
resultant vector which must include direction. Use the tail to tip method.
Ex: Do with class: Use tail to tip method to find the resultant displacement.
A hiker starts at the base camp and walks 12 km W, then 6 km 50o S of west, then 8 km
due North. How far does he end up from base camp? Use 1 cm = 1 km.
Homework:
1. What is another way of expressing the vector – 50 km, west?
2. Express 20 m/s North – 15 m/s East as an addition problem.
3. Vector Addition. Find resultant using tail to tip method.
a) Walk 4 km east, and 6 km 35o N of E. Use a scale 1 cm = 0.5 km.
b) Drive west at 70 km/h, then drive 50o S of W (230o) at 40 km/h. Use a scale of
1 cm = 10 km/h.
c) Drive 50o S of W (230o) at 40 km/h, drive west at 70 km/h. Use a scale of 1
cm = 10 km/h.
d) Compare your answers from b and c above. What can you say about the order
that vectors are added?
4. Subtraction. Find resultant using tail to tip method.
e) 65 km east – 40 km 30o S of east. Use a scale of 1 cm = 10 km.
f) 40 km 30o S of East – 65 km east. Use a scale of 1 cm = 10 km.
