I can statement: I can underline the linking verb in a sentence. I can tell whether the verb is an action verb or a linking verb. Standard/Lesson Day 1 Reading Skill: Introduce Weekly Spelling Words Have the students unscramble the spelling words. Use the website to create a word scramble. Then print it off as a pdf and have them work together to figure out the new spelling words. As a bonus, see if they can figure out the pattern once they have unscrambled the words. Day 2: Whole Class Activity Reading Skill: Introduce Weekly Grammar Skill 1. Have them paste the rule paper on the left side of their journal. Linking Verbs Linking verbs do not create any movement or action Linking verbs connect the subject to the rest of the sentence. They are verbs that describe states of being. These are true linking verbs: any form of the verb be am is are was were Has been are being become seem If you can replace an action verb with a being verb and the sentence still makes sense, then it is a linking verb. Sometimes these verbs are linking verbs: appear Feel grow look prove smell sound taste turn 2. Under the rules, have them write examples. The dogs looks happy. The dogs = happy The dogs are happy. Matthew tasted the stew. Mathew is the stew. Tasted is not a linking verb. Materials Unscramble words Rule Sheet for journal 3. Diagram a sentence in journal using color. She is happy with the rubber ducky. - Have them divide the subject and the predicate with a slash mark. - Have them underline the nouns in the sentence with blue. - Have them draw a black triangle around the pronouns. - Have them draw a black line back to the word the reflective pronoun modifies. (not one in this sentence) - Have them circle the adjective with a red colored pencil and draw an arrow to the noun it modifies. - Then have them find and circle the articles with a green colored pencil. - Now have them circle the verb with a yellow colored pencil. In this sentence, it is a helping verb. Colored pencils Day 3: Activity Have the students complete the skill practice sheet. Have them paste it into their journal.
