Edward Martinez acknowledged to the committee that Carrie Starbird is taking over the chairmanship of
C&I while Joe Futtner is teaching in Florence, Italy with the Study Abroad program. He also said the
new C&I policies will go forward to the Academic Senate very soon and then go to the Board of Trustees
for its approval.
II.
PRESENTATION
The chair presented the training on stand-alone courses as required by the state. (The PowerPoint
presentation is attached to the official copy of these minutes.)
Ellen Ligons provided handouts on the Career and Technical Education Program and Course
Development Approval Process (attached to the official copy of these minutes).
III.
CURRICULUM CONSIDERATIONS WITH ACTION TO FOLLOW
The Curriculum and Instruction Committee has recommended to the Office of Instructional Administration
that the following course changes and additions be approved. Changes will not become effective until
after administrative and Board of Trustees approval.
UNITS
A. HEALTH SCIENCES: Barbara Freund presented the following credit curricula for
consideration:
ADDITIONS – Effective Spring 2011:
MA 171A EXPLORING TOPICS IN MEDICAL ASSISTING
Exploratory course: Specific topic identified in Schedule of Classes.
Lecture focusing on topics of current and general interest. Maximum credit 4 units, 1 unit
each semester. Total of 18 hours lecture.

MA 171B EXPLORING TOPICS IN MEDICAL ASSISTING

Exploratory course: Specific topic identified in Schedule of Classes.
Course focusing on topics of current and general interest. Maximum credit 12 units, 3 units
each semester. Total of 54 hours lecture.
MA 171C EXPLORING TOPICS IN MEDICAL ASSISTING

Exploratory course: Specific topic identified in Schedule of Classes.
Course focusing on topics of current and general interest. Maximum credit 4 units, 1 unit each
semester. Total of 18 hours lecture and 18 hours laboratory.
MSC HINTZMAN/HAINES to approve the addition of the above credit curriculum.

IV. ANNOUNCEMENTS
The Distance Education committee continues its work on policies.
Sub-committees have been established to create SLOs for all the areas of emphasis and
majors.
