Paul has discussed with me the possibility of presenting the widows the caps in respect to those players who are no longer with us. It is obviously a very sensitive matter and there are inevitably, likely to be difficulties in tracing many of them. The only two I am immediately aware of are Mrs. Wright and Mrs. Fagg, both of whom have some contact with the Club (indeed Mrs. Fagg is a regular attender at Canterbury). Mr. Troughton is the grandson of Lionel Troughton, capped in 1914; the Morritts, as you know are the distant relations of Colin Blythe, capped in 1900 and Anthony Johnstone is the son of C.P. Johnstone who was capped in 1925. If you would like further information please let me know, otherwise I presume arrangements will be made for a ceremony next season. I am sorry about this, and although it made no difference to the subsequent numbering, I felt that you should have a complete new list with those which were omitted now being included. Yours sincerely, DAVID ROBERTSON Hon Curator Curator’s Corner Kent’s Capped Players It was 120 years ago this last season that the first cap was awarded, and the recipient was the 4th Lord Harris, who was to serve the County Club for more than 50 years. Since that first, a further 193 players have been awarded caps, and readers will know that each of them is recorded with their photograph in the players’ dining room at Canterbury. At least, I thought that to be the case until a few weeks ago but having checked them against the records published by the Club’s Honorary Statistician, Howard Milton, I find that we have one missing! One of two caps awarded in 1890 was to Leonard Alison Hamilton, who played 20 matches for the County between 1890 and 1892 during which he scored 645 runs at an average of 18.42. So this is by way of an appeal. Does anyone have a photograph of the said Leonard Hamilton which I might borrow to have copied, so completing our record of capped players, something which we believe to be unique to Kent. Please contact me at the Club if you can help. ************************* Our Trophy Cabinet Since the season’s end we have taken possession of a number of trophies which were won in 2002. The Walter Lawrence Trophy, awarded to Matthew Fleming for the fastest hundred of the season takes pride of place in the Chiesman Pavilion trophy cabinet. This is the seventh occasion on which a Kent player has won it. It was won firstly by Frank Woolley in 1934, since when it has been awarded to Leslie Ames (twice) Asif Iqbal, Alan Knott and Carl Hooper. The second, much less publicised success was on the island of Guernsey at the end of the season when a Kent X1 made up of many first team players took on Essex in what has become an annual challenge match on the island between two county sides for the Kleinwort Benson trophy. Our Second X1’s double success, is represented by the First-Class Counties second X1 Shield for the Championship, and the Cup for winning the knock-out competition. We were sorry to say farewell to the Norwich Union trophy, but our cupboard is far from bare! David Robertson Hon. So far, a search by Derek has drawn a blank, except that he has identified the said Leonard Hamilton in the Kent team photograph which appeared in the 1891 Red Lilleywhite. This will presumably be the number which will appear on the cap to be presented to them. You will note that there is at present a total of 75 and I understand that Simon Willis is placing an order for that quantity. It has been suggested that consideration might be given to a presentation box in which the cap could be kept, together with a note of provenance which might be signed by the Club Chairman.
