Miss Elizabeth n. Reid sometime of Moorland, Balmossie Street, Barnhill, Broughty Ferry, now c/o Mrs Walker “The Lions”, Princes Street,
Monifieth, has asked me to reply to your letter of 29th August last, and I have pleasure in furnishing the information which you asked for.
Miss Reid’s income is now derived from the following
1.
250 6% Preference Shares of the Samnuggur Jute Factory co. Ltd.
2.
10 7% Cumulative Preferred Shares of Imperial Chemical Industries Co. Ltd.
The net income from which last year amounted to £18:11:9. Until 5th July last, when her sister Miss Jane N. Reid died, Miss Elizabeth N. Reid’s
interest in these holdings extended to one-half share only. Miss Jane Reid, however by her Will bequeathed all she died possessed of to her
sister, and Miss Elizabeth Reid has thus succeeded to the remaining one-half of these holdings.
The dwelling house known as The Moorland, Barnhill, belonged to the Misses Reid jointly, but since her sister’s death Miss Elizabeth N. Reid is
now the sole proprietorix. The Moorlands was valued for Government Duty purposes at the date of Miss Jane Reid’s death at £600. But
unfortunately it is bonded to the extent of £650, so that there is really no value in this asset. The assessed rental of The Moorland is £26. It has
been let furnished for £52 per annum, but out of that Miss Reid has to pay a feuduty of £3:14:2 in addition to Bond interest and Owner’s Rates.
The surplus Revenue, therefore, is trifling.
Besides the above, Miss Reid in interested to the extent of a fourth share of a property in Gellatly Street, which has been in the possession of
the Bondholders for many years. She derives no income at all from this source, nor does it appear likely that she will ever do so.
She is, however, in receipt of an annuity of £30 from the Indigent Gentlewoman’s Fund and an annuity of £17:10/- from the William Harris
Institution.
Miss Reid is 78 years of age. She will be 79 on 14th February next. Her general health is not good and she is nearly blind. Her father was Robert
Reid, Milton, Monifieth, who died many years ago. Unfortunately Moss Reid cannot remember the year in which her father died.

Miss Jane Grindlay, Aged 70 of 2, Stevenson Street, Lochee. Father David Grindlay (1877).
Suffering from rheumatism for years has not been able to work regularly but did when she could and is unable to
earn a subsistence. Unmarried. Income – Old Age Pension – 10/- weekly – and any little she can earn knitting
socks.
James Ramsay, (1870). Aged 90, at 3, Bank Street, Lochee. Unable to work due to old age. Income Old age
Pension – 10/- - Weekly.
James Bruce, (1897). Aged 64, of 70, Church Street. Suffering from double rupture and asthma. Cannot get a job
though he attends at the Baker Call House every morning and would be willing to work if he could get it.

Has four of a family – one daughter been idle for two years and gets no benefit – also a son on short time in the
Hackle Works who only has 13/- per week; another son with only 18/- per week (an apprentice) and a daughter in
Keillers on short time.
David Law Paterson, ((1925). Aged 65. Has suffered from rheumatoid arthritis for 71/2 years and has to be
wheeled about in an invalid chair. Income – Old Age Pension – 10/- per week – Ancient Order of Forresters – 3/p.week. Interest on £100 War Load @ 31/2%. Interest on £100 deposit in Bank @ 2/12%. Interest on 50 £1 shares
Calcutta Electric corporation (last dividend was 12%. Note: Mr Paterson has had the services of a Masseuse for the
last 21/2 years @ 5/- per week, and he still has this in addition to medicine and treatment.

Mr David Paterson has suffered for past six years from osteo-arthritis in ankles, knees, fingers, wrists & shoulders. He is unable to walk about
and, frequently, when joints are acutely inflamed, he is confined to bed.

Mrs B. C. Kidd, Aged 69. Widow. Late husband Thomas B. Kidd (1881) Had to give up work after a serious
operation six years ago. Family grown up. Income: dependant on one son for whom she keeps house and who had
to give up his work this year owing to the failure of his eyesight. He supports himself and Petitioner off his pension.
Daughter who is employed as a housekeeper also assists.
Mrs Mary S. Bruce, Aged 67. Late husband Robert Hume Bruce (1895). No income, due to old age. Family grown
up. Income – None – dependant on married daughter.
Mrs Florence McNab, Aged 51. c/o Mrs Gibson, Westoe, Kenton Bank Foot, Newcastle-on-Tyne. Widow of David
McNab (1899). Being slightly deaf and suffering from heart trouble. No children. Income 5/- weekly as companion
housekeeper to Mrs Gibson. Has often tried to get a better paid situation.
Mrs Margaret Anderson, Aged 64. Late husband David Anderson (1897). Unable to work due to an injury to one
of her hands and somewhat erratic health. Family grown up. Income Widow’s Pension – 10/- weekly.
Mrs M. J. Durkie, Aged 74 of Mill of Mains, By Dundee. Due to old age and frailty. Widow of A. F. Durkie (1891).
Family grown up. Income from Albert Street Property under £100. Requires constant attention of unmarried
daughter whom she supports, as well as unemployed son. Holds 60 Ordinary Shares Fine Cotton Spinner’s &
Doublers’ Association on which there is no return.
Miss Rankin Macdonald, Aged 77. Due to old age. Daughter of James Macdonald (1839). Unmarried. Income
From the estate of her cousin the late A. C. Mitchell - £40 per annum. Dividends about £6 per annum. Interest on
£10 in Bank – 1/11 per annum.
SHOEMAKERS
Mrs Agnes Adam McGowan, Aged 92. Due to age, blindness and General Debility. Widow of James McGowan
(1894). One son, resident in Canada, who is also a member of the Trade. No source of income, other than the old
age pension.
GLOVERS
Margaret Rattray Stewart, Aged 51 of 70, Ellengowan Drive. Widow of Thomas Stewart (1914). One child 18
years of age (Born 16th March 1915).
Income Clydesdale Bank £2:2:8 interest. Savings Bank £1:9:4 interest. Harbour Trust Loan £100 being repaid at
Martinmas 1933. Son’s earnings 14/- per week.

Dundee) & am left very lonely as I lost my only daughter 2 years ago & now live alone. I was from home when you wrote – I am very much
obliged to you & the Old Age pension & you know when I am nearly 80 years of age I am not fit for very much since my brother Mr N. Warden of
Cultra who died 2 years ago I had to leave Central Avenue for a cheap rent & hope you will understand the mistake & trouble I have given you.

had a breakdown & conjunctivitis of her eyes. Not married. Have no income beyond what I receive in meantime
from Mr Henderson my brother-in-law to help me which is temporary.
Mary Edith Norrie, Aged 60. Father Charles Norrie (1863). Being older now is not so able to get employment,
either daily or otherwise. Unmarried. Income from invested funds about £187 or £188:7:7.
Helen Young or Matthew, Aged 47. Widow of James Matthew (1928). Due to her widowhood and care of her
family. Children: James 15 years: Mabel 13 years: Margaret 10 years. Income £125 per annum from investments
inclusive of assessed rent of house which is bonded.

age and inability to earn good wages. Three sons, 2 are working but not contributing: 1 is at present unemployed.

wages. He has investments amounting to the capital value of £400. He has resided at Cornton Vale Farm, Bridge

I have now got the Old Age Pension but all the other means I have is not worth stating & it is always getting less. If I can be spared any more in

I am unable to work for my living I am so bad with Rheumatism & other troubles I have to get some assistance.

Mrs Margaret Milne Grant or Moir, Aged 52 of 22 Panmure Terrace, Barnhill. Widow of John Moir (1927). Owing
to the death on 27th August 1932 of her husband the said John Moir, whereby her means of subsistence was very
substantially reduced and she was left with two children, one now aged 13 years and the other now aged 10 years,
who require to be maintained and educated, she is thereby unable to earn a subsistence. Income – Gross yearly
income from Husband’s Estate £70. Income from own Estate £7.
Mrs Mary D. Graham, Aged 55 of 6711 –10th NW, Seattle, Washington, U.S.A. Daughter of George Watson
(1899). No work even if my health permitted it. I have work one day a week and frequently a little help from
charitable organisations. Three daughters, Jean aged 20, Grace & Jessie both 14 years. Income – Jean, part time
work. Any other information can be had from my sister Jean D. Watson 12, Molison Street, Dundee
Mrs Margaret Piggot, Aged 59 of 32 West 46th Street, Bayonne N.J., U.S.A. Widow of James Piggot (1895). Her
two sons Ronald & Charles inability to secure employment for three years. No Income.

to heart trouble TB. On left lung, Kidney trouble. 5 dependents 13 years, 10 years, 7 years, 4 years, 2 years. No

Melville Niven, Aged 48 of 28 Lawson Place. Being unable to follow employment through wounds caused in late
war. Father John Coupar Niven (1892). Unmarried. Wart Pension £1 per week.

Miss Rebecca Watson, Aged 76 of 98 Victoria road, Dundee. Daughter of James Watson (1869). Due to Old Age
and infirmity. Unmarried. Income – Interest on £1000 31/2 War Stock and £10 per Annum from Baxter fund.
Miss Mary Jane Low, Aged 80 of 3, Gowrie Place, Hawkhill, Dundee. Daughter of Thomas Low (1836).
Unmarried. Income £2:17:6 per month being interest on £500 loaned to nephew in law and £12 per annum from
Glasgow Corporation.

Mrs G. A. Fairweather, Aged 68 of Cidhmore 388, Perth Road, Dundee. Widow of C. L. Fairweather (1904). Due
to being disabled suffering from general weakness owing to a fractured thigh & ulcerated legs. Both sons
deceased. Income – Widow’s Pension ten shillings weekly. Military grant or allowance five shillings weekly.

a breakdown in health owing to heart affection after 30 years of school work, none of it being pension able, having
been in privately owned schools. Unmarried. Income - £25 per annum from Scottish indigent Gentlewoman’s
association and allowance kindly granted by Weavers Trade Dundee, hitherto.
