We welcome you to 9 east Transplant and hope you enjoy your time here. Neonatal Intensive Care Unit Operating Theatres Intensive Care The neonatal intensive care unit is situated with the clinical service of RPAH Women and Babies, a busy and progressive perinatal unit with approximately 4800 births per year. In addition to the management of normal pregnancies, the service is largely responsible for a high-risk population referred by both the metropolitan and country areas of NSW, interstate and our South Pacific neighbours. The neonatal ICU has 9 level 3 ventilated cots and 24 level 2 non ventilated cots. As such, care of sick term and preterm infants is provided in three areas. Intensive Care, High Dependency and Special Care. There are approximately 800 infants admitted each year. As a team of neonatal nurses providing specialist care to infants and families in crisis, we aim to ensure the highest standard of care by providing an environment that encourages both personal and professional development. Professional communication within the multidisciplinary team is excellent. Students undertaking a clinical placement in this environment as a part of their undergraduate course work, or those electing to develop a better understanding of this critical care environment prior to completion of their studies, will be rewarded by this unique opportunity to see another side of specialist nursing and multidisciplinary care delivered at its best. RPAH has 25 theatres located at 2 sites with over 15,500 procedures are performed each year. Clinical specialisation in either scrub/scout or recovery is available. We also offer many opportunities for advancement within the perioperative environment. Students undertaking a clinical placement in this environment will observe the importance of multidisciplinary teamwork, infection control practices, risk management, pre/intra and post operative management of patients with particular needs. Students will observe and learn the importance of good post-operative assessment and management. The RPA Intensive Care Service is a 54 bed unit incorporating General ICU/HDU, Neurosciences, ICU/HDU and Cardiovascular ICU/HDU. Students undertaking a critical care component of their undergraduate nursing program and those electing critical care on completion of their program, will develop a deeper understanding of the importance of basic nursing care as applied to the seriously ill, trauma or surgical patient. This unit also provides an introduction to technologies required to support life during the critical phase of a patient’s illness and/or recovery process but may also include nursing patients (and caring for their relatives) when patients die or are dying in the Intensive Care environment. Students will also be given the opportunity to observe the multidisciplinary team approach to patient care which is fundamental to the nursing care delivered to patients within this highly specialised environment.
