THE LATINO CULTURAL CENTER ANNOUNCES JUNE 2013 EVENTS
Dallas – May 28, 2013 – The LCC proudly announces it’s June schedule of events. This
month the LCC presents two lectures, its monthly family day and a film presents in
partnership with the Dallas Mexican American Historical League (DMAHL) and the
Department of History and Mexican American Studies (MAS) at the University of North
Texas (UNT). For more details on these events, please visit

June 7, 2013, 7 pm - A Conversation with Luis Valdez, Founding Artistic Director of El
Teatro Campesino – As part of the LCC Free Lecture Series, the LCC will presents A
Conversation with Luis Valdez. Luis Valdez is the father of Chicano theater in the United
States. A celebrated author, he is regarded as a pivotal member of the Chicano
Movement. Luis Valdez is the writer and director of Zoot Suit and La Bamba, among
other works. Mr. Valdez is part of the LCC Lecture Series’ symposium on the state of
Latino theater in the United States. Moderator José Luis Torres works in the Public
Information Office for the City of Dallas. Admission is free and open to the public.
June 8, 2013, 11 am – Target Second Saturday – Sponsored by Target, the LCC’S
monthly family day will feature a theater performance at 12 pm: Dallas Children’s
Theater will present The True Story of the Three Little Pigs. Dallas Children's Theater was
founded in 1984 by Robyn Flatt and Dennis Vincent, in response to the growing need for
professional family theater. A 501(c) 3 non-profit organization, DCT is a forum for artistic
collaboration, a vital educational resource for metropolitan schools, and a vehicle of
enrichment for the greater Dallas community.
Target Second Saturday will also have a children’s craft workshop from 11 am to 1 pm;
Story time from 11:30 am to 12 pm with Reforma; and more children’s craft workshops
from 1 to 3 pm. There will be a musical performance by Baraja de Oro in the theater
from 3 to 4 pm. Baraja de Oro is a conjunto band that was nominated for several
awards in 2008 and 2009 by the Tejano Music Awards.
June 19, 2013, 6:30 pm – Texas Before the Alamo – The LCC, in partnership with the
Dallas Mexican American Historical League (DMAHL) and the Department of History
and Mexican American Studies (MAS) at the University of North Texas (UNT), present a
Spanish Texas History Symposium and premiere of the new documentary film Texas
Before The Alamo. Filmed at actual historic sites in Texas and Mexico with noted
historians and professional actors, Texas Before The Alamo is about the founding of
Texas and the Spanish who established missions, presidios and trails now known as
Goliad, the Alamo, San Antonio Missions & El Camino Real de los Tejas. The film is
dedicated to the research and tenacity of authors, archaeologists, historical
organizations and researchers of Spanish Texas who have been consultants and
producers for this project. Unrecognized and often criticized, they have labored for
over a century in the Spanish Archives and at historic sites on the epic stories of the true
pioneers of Texas. This screening is free and open to the public
June 20, 2013, 7 pm – The Diversity of Dallas and North Texas Latino Artists – The final
lecture in the LCC Free Lecture series will feature Angel Fernández. Fernández will delve
into the work of local Latino artists and discuss the different ways in which these artists
approach their subjects. This lecture is part of the LCC’s focus on local Latino artists and
their work. Fernández is an Associate Professor of Art at Tarrant County College and a
practicing sculptor. This lecture is free and open to the public.

About the Latino Cultural Center
The Latino Cultural Center is a division of the City of Dallas Office of Cultural Affairs.

preservation, development and promotion of Latino and Hispanic arts and culture. The
