27 Dec 1995 ALBUQUERQUE, USA
TWA MD83 from Phoenix to New York, USA, diverted
to Albuquerque, when captain's windshield cracked at
cruising altitude. Landing safe.
25 Dec 1995 SAN FRANCISCO, USA
TWA MD82 in San Francisco, USA, got right engine
throttle stuck during landing due to frozen hydraulics.
The engine was shut down on time and the plane
landed safely.
21 Dec 1995 LONDON, UK
Iberia MD87 from London/Gatwick, UK to Madrid,
Spain was instructed to fly below minimum safe
altitude at only 300 feet immediately after takeoff, when ATC lost track of an Air Algerie B737
landing behind it, off its course and suspectedly
on go-around.
1 Dec 1995 NEWARK, USA
Continental MD82 aborted takeoff from Newark, USA,
when ATC saw sparks coming out of left engine
during takeoff. Compressor blades were damaged.
12 Nov 1995 HARTFORD-BRADLEY, USA
American Airlines MD83 Chicago-Hartford/Bradley CI,
USA, with 72 pax came in too low, struck trees 5
kms from runway, failed to go around and landed
short. No casualties.
Nov 1995 CHICAGO, USA
American Airlines MD82 or 83 hit by lightning at
gate at Chicago O'Hare airport. Three ground
workers injured.

22 Oct 1995 EL PASO, USA
Continental MD82 from Houston to Los Angeles, USA,
diverted to El Paso when frozen toilet fluid, "blue
ice", broke loose from fuselage and got ingested in
left engine and destroyed it. Landing safe. U.S.
aviation authorities issued a warning against "blue
ice" specifically on MD80's.
23 Aug 1995 SEOUL, KOREA
Korean MD82 landing in Seoul, Korea skidded off
runway in heavy weather. No injuries.
July 1995 BALTIMORE, USA
TWA MD82 from Baltimore to St.Louis, USA aborted
take-off when right main landing gear blew out.
The plane stopped 50 m from a major highway; all
138 pax successfully evacuated without injuries.
28 Apr 1995 MANCHESTER, UK
Airtours International MD83 from Las Palmas, Canary
Isles, Spain to Manchester, UK, with 171 pax
suffered landing gear collapse at landing in
Manchester, UK. Four injuries.
9 Feb 1995 NEW YORK, USA
Delta Airlines MD88 in New York, USA aborted takeoff at 100 knots after bump in runway knocked out
AHRS altitude-based navigating devices.
30 Jan 1995 NASHVILLE, USA
Delta Airlines MD88 in Nashville, USA evacuated
after landing after fuel leak caused extensive
smoke in one of the engines. No injuries.
28 Dec 1994 DALLAS, USA
Delta Airlines MD88 landing in Dallas, USA got
cockpit filled with smoke when water from leaking
wind-shield short-circuited wiper motor. Landing
safe.
16 Dec 1994 CHARLOTTE, USA
USAir MD82 performed emergency descent and diverted
to Charlotte, USA after F/O's windshield cracked at
cruising altitude.

26 Nov 1994 RALEIGH-DURHAM, USA
USAir MD81 performed emergency landing in
Raleigh/Durham, USA; after loud pop in right engine
at cruise altitude. The engine stopped responding
to throttle and was shut down. Safe landing.
22 Nov 1994 ST.LOUIS, USA
TWA MD82 in St.Louis, USA with 140 pax hit Cessna
441 which entered runway 750 m ahead of
accelerating MD82 by error. Cessna crew of two
died, eight TWA pax injured when fuel-leaking plane
was evacuated.
3 Nov 1994 KAJAANI, FINLAND
Air Liberté MD83 from Monastir, Tunisia to Kajaani,
Finland with 164 pax touched down with over-thrust,
automatic spoilers didn't kill wings, the plane
bounced and left wing struck ground. No casualties.
2 Mar 1994 NEW YORK, USA
Continental Airlines MD82 for Denver with 81 pax
aborted takeoff at LaGuardia, New York, USA, after
speed-measuring pitot tubes were blocked by snow
and gave wrong indications. The plane overran
runway and 29 persons were injured. The plane
was severely damaged. Aviation authorities blamed
the pilots for several faulty measures leading
to the crash.
26 Dec 1993 PORTLAND, USA
Alaska Airlines MD82 returned to Portland, USA
after air duct cracked. Cabin pressure fell at
5,000 m altitude and cabin temperature increased.
Landing safe.
24 Dec 1993 LONG BEACH, USA
Alaska Airlines MD82 lost hydraulic pressure on two
subsequent approaches to Long Beach, CA, USA.
Landing safe despite nose landing gear, thrust
reverses and brakes did not work normally.

8 Dec 1993 TAIPEI, TAIWAN
hina Northern MD82 from Qingdao to Fujian, China
with 73 pax was hijacked to Taiwan by 26-year old
Chinese passenger and his girl-friend, who surrendered
to Taiwan authorities.
24 Nov 1993 COPENHAGEN, DENMARK
Scandinavian MD87 from Stuttgart, Germany to Copenhagen,
Denmark, caught fire during landing, because of suspected
arcing from non-standard 115 V plug carelessly installed
for vacuum-cleaning. The fire punched a 30 cm hole
in the fuselage. None of the installed circuit breakers
had tripped. Case reviewed in search for similarities to
TWA800 crash off New York, USA in 1996.
13 Nov 1993 URUMQI, CHINA
China Northern MD82 from Beijing to Urumqi, China
with 92 pax crashed in a field 3 kms before runway
when autopilot re-engaged during ILS approach to
Urumqi in dense fog. 12 casualties, four of them
crew members.
30 Oct 1993 MIAMI, USA
British West Indies' (BWIA) MD83 from Miami, USA
to Barbados with 76 pax had two flight attendant
injured when a water heater in the forward galley
exploded, due to a worn-out relay and a faulty
security valve.
26 Oct 1993 FUZHOU, CHINA
Qilu Airlines MD82 from Shenzen to Fuzhou, China,
touched down with 91 pax 2,000 meters down the runway
in heavy rainstorm and overran into a swamp. Two
passengers died, plane broken up beyond repair.
25 Oct 1993 KAOHSIUNG, TAIWAN
Far Eastern Air Transport MD82 taking off from
Kaohsiung, Taiwan with 160 pax had left engine
failure and overshot runway threshold by 1,200 m on
return. Runway overrun with loss of main landing
gear. No injuries.

18 June 1993 SAVANNAH, USA
American MD82 performed emergency return to
Savannah, USA after fire in left engine. Fire
apparently extinguished by on-board equipment.
After landing passengers were evacuated through
forward door evacuation slides. No casualties.
1 May 1993 TAMPA, USA
USAir MD81 landed safely in Tampa, USA after right
engine was completely destroyed by explosion at
cruise altitude.
27 Apr 1993 DENVER, USA
Continental MD82 with 113 pax from San Francisco
suffered landing gear collapse at 210 km/h after
touch-down in Denver, USA and skidded to a halt
with the wing touching ground. Two slight injuries.
26 Apr 1993 DENVER, USA
Continental MD82 from Salt Lake City lost 40 km/h
airspeed due to microburst/windshear and stalled
when landing in Denver, USA. Tail and aft undercarriage struck ground when the plane touched
down hard at 2,2 g. No injuries.
30 Aug 1992 BOSTON, USA
Private Jet Expeditions MD83 in Boston, USA,
aborted takeoff when two tires exploded at 220 km/h
and left engine ingested rubber debris. No
casualties.
28 July 1992 DALLAS, USA
TWA MD82 from Richmond to Dallas, USA lost hydraulic
pressure en route and had landing gear extended
manually when landing in Dallas.
27 Dec 1991 STOCKHOLM, SWEDEN
Scandinavian SAS MD81 Stockholm-Warsaw with 123 pax
performed emergency landing near Stockholm, Sweden,
after ice from the wings killed both engines. No
casualties.

5 May 1991 SAVANNAH, USA
Delta MD88 from Savannah to Atlanta, USA with 91
pax collided with an airport van while taxiing
at night. The car caught fire. The plane was slideevacuated during which five passengers were injured.
4 Feb 1990 HELSINKI, FINLAND
Finnair MD87 Oslo-Helsinki cut the roof off a runway
lights maintenance car parked on the runway in
Helsinki, Finland. ATC communications patterns
were faulty; landing at fog and dark MD pilots never
saw the car. No casualties.
18 Jan 1990 BUFFALO, USA
USAir MD81 from Buffalo to Cleveland, USA turned back
after the cockpit was filled with smoke from overheated
electrical wire insulation caused by improper electrical
installations in left generator. Intense arcing had
caused minor fire, No casualties.
12 Sep 1989 CHICAGO, USA
American MD82 from Rochester to Chicago, USA with
102 pax lost all hydraulic pressure on approach
to Chicago. During landing, excess reverse thrust
was applied, which affected rudder steering. The
plane veered off the runway and the nose gear
plunged into an open manhole. No injuries.
1 Mar 1989 HOUSTON, USA
Continental MD82 from San Antonio with 117 pax
was seconds from a collision with another airliner
on approach to Houston, USA. On line-up for landing,
pilots misinterpreted ATC and began a 360-degrees
turn towards a TWA MD82 from Austin with 57 pax
coming to finals from the opposite direction. At
900 m altitude the planes missed each other by
120 meters.
12 Jun 1988 POSADAS, ARGENTINA
Austral Airlines MD81 from Resistencia to Posadas,
Argentina, crashed on approach 5 kms short of runway,
after striking 20-25 m high trees in bad weather. in
22 fatalities.

16 Aug 1987 DETROIT, USA
Northwest Airlines MD82 bound for Dallas with
148 pax crashed in Detroit, USA, after taking
off without slats extended. The plane lifted off
close to the end of runway, but failed to climb,
left wing hit a light pole and the plane crashed
into ground. A 4-year-old girl only survivor.
3 Sep 1984 WASHINGTON, USA
New York Air MD81 departing from Washington D.C.,
USA with 81 pax struck wingtips with a United B727
at runway holding point. No injuries.
1 Dec 1981 AJACCIO, FRANCE
Inex Adria MD81 from Ljubljana, Yugoslavia to
Ajaccio, France crashed into a mountain 40 kms
south of destination. ATC thought the plane was on
straight approach when descending below 2,000 m
minimum altitude, while crew had entered holding
pattern too low. 173 pax and crew of seven died.
19 Jun 1980 YUMA AZ, USA
MDC test aircraft slid off runway in Yuma, Arizona,
USA, while test crew simulated landing with total
hydraulic system failure. The pilot thrust-reversed
engines before nose-wheel touchdown and groundlooped. Crew of three unharmed. Later the plane was
chopped in half when the rescueing crane fell
across the plane.
2 May 1980 EDWARDS AFB, USA
MDC test aircraft was landed so hard at Edwards Air
Force Base, CA, USA by an FAA pilot at maximum
descent rate tests, that entire tail broke off.
Plane came to a halt after using 1,000 metres of
runway. Crew of seven unharmed, except for flight
engineer, who broke his ankle.
