Ancient Greece or Rome Project Due ______________ *This project counts as a test grade Choose from one of the following projects. You must write in your project choice and get a parent signature. There will be two in class research days. If additional time is needed it is up to you to make those arrangements. Students need to include a bibliography of three or more sources. They cannot all be internet sites. Google is a search engine not a site. 1. Mosaics were a popular art form in the Roman Empire and were used to decorate the floors and walls of homes and public buildings. Create a mosaic design by gluing pieces of colored paper, small tiles or stones into designs from nature or Roman mythology. Refer to books with pictures of Roman mosaics or excavations of Pompeii. Your project is to be no smaller than 12” x 12”. Write a 1-2 page paper about mosaic art in the ancient Greek and Roman era. 2. Create a diorama of Pompeii showing what archeologists have discovered about the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius. Your diorama should be no smaller than an adult shoe box. Attach a 4 x 6 note card explaining your diorama to the back of your project. 3. Learn about ancient Roman or Greek banquets/feasts and write a 1-2 page paper about the food of that culture. Then, find a recipe of that culture. Prepare one of the recipes of your choice to share with the class. 4. Research ancient Greek or Roman architecture. Then, take photographs of architecture page paper about what you learned from this time period in architecture. Classical columns, pediments, domes, and arches are some of the classical forms used in monuments and buildings. 5. Choose a mythological god or goddess and write a 1-2 page paper about them. Create a throne to represent your god or goddess. Thrones should be no smaller than 12” tall x 8”wide and no larger than 2’ tall x 18” wide 6. Create a model of an ancient Greek or Roman building such as the Pantheon, Coliseum, Parthenon, Acropolis, or a temple. Models should be no smaller than 12” x 12”. Write a 1-2 page paper about the importance of this building and its history. 7. Research ancient Roman government and compare it to the United States government. How is our government similar and different from ancient Roman government? Write a 1-2 page paper and make a poster to display your findings. 8. Research a famous ancient Greek or Roman person that had an impact on their culture. Create a poster board about them with a 1-2 page paper about what you learned. Some choices are as follow: Julius Caesar, Octavian/Augustus, Constantine, Theodosius, Marcus Aurelius, Mark Antony, Cassius, Socrates, Plato, Heraclitus. Only one student per person. 9. Research the exciting pentathlon and learn about one way the Olympics have changed throughout history. Use the internet to find out more about the participants and judging of each of the five events. Make a book about your version of the pentathlon. Include: page1- cover with title, your name, class period, date and a picture, page 2- introduction and three resources, and pages 3-7 should be one page for each event (list the event at the top of each page and draw below it) Draw accurately, neatly, add detail, and use colored pencils.
