ACTIVITIES
Intro: This is a start of a three week unit in
collegiate style wrestling which is not WWE.
You will learn drills and moves for wrestling
to help you be successful.
Fitness: WU and stretch
Lesson Focus:
1.) Answers to pretest
2.) Individual and team scoring
3.) Explain 3 period wrestling match
positions
4.) Illegal and potentially dangerous holds
5.) Demonstrate TD., Esc., Rev., Nearfall, &
Pin
Closure: How many periods in a wrestling
match? How many points for TD, Esc, Rev,
Nearfall? Name one illegal hold
CUE PHRASES/INSTRUCTIONS
Organize into weight groups if time
permits. 3 periods in wrestling - neutral,
referee's (top/bottom)
Demo's - give point values after each
TD = take opponent to mat and gain
control =2 pts
Esc= breaking away when on bottom and
ending neutral = 1pt
Rev= when on bottom, moving and
ending in top position = 2pts
Nearfall= shoulder angle less than 90
degrees from mat for at least a 2 count
but less than 5 = 2pts
3 Pt Nearfall= same as 2pt nearfall, but
must be at least 5 count
Pin= both scapulas on mat for 2 count
Team Scoring: Point margin of victory
= number of team points.
Point margin of victory: 1 - 7 = 3 pts; 8 14 = 4pts; 15 and above = 5pts; Pin =
6pts
Illegal holds: Headlock w/o arm;
locking hands in top ref's pos. while
bottom man still on mat; full nelson;
Potentially dangerous holds: anything
that goes against a joint

OBJECTIVE: SWD proper stance and double-leg takedown
ACTIVITIES
Intro: Quickly review rules and illegal
holds
Today you will learn a proper wrestling
stance and a double- leg takedown.
Fitness: Stretching specific to wrestling back stretches, neck bridges, partner
spinning. Front rolls, shoulder rolls, duck
walk, army crawl.
Lesson Focus:
1.) Proper stance - square stance or lead leg.
2.) Double-leg takedown
Closure: Name the take down we learned
today. How many points is it worth?
CUE PHRASES/INSTRUCTIONS
Neck bridge-progressive from hands,
knees, & head to head and feet. Duck
walk-step, drive knee down, trail leg up.
Army crawl-use forearms on belly, no
legs. Ptnr spinning-bottom man on
hands & knees, top man balance chest on
ptnr's back. Spin on whistle.
Organize into weight groups and
partners.
Stance-slightly bent knees. Feet should
be shoulder width, elbows in, back
straight, head up. Short steps, don't cross
feet-shuffle.
Takedown-off. man step between ptnr's
feet, (def. man- scarecrow) w/o lifting
foot drive knee down to mat, head on hip
same side as trail leg. Def. man lean over
ptnr slightly. Off. man trail leg up, drive
w/foot and push w/ head

behind

Why is it important to know a counter to a
takedown?
CUE PHRASES/INSTRUCTIONS
Individual - start on stomach, push up
leaving from thighs to shoelaces still in
contact with mat. Push backwards.
W/ptnr - one ptnr crawls on hands &
knees, second ptnr's chest is on first
ptnr's back with his own shoelaces on the
mat. First ptnr crawls forward on hands
& knees while second ptnr slides on his
laces.
Sprawl = ptnr A shoots dbl leg @ 50%
speed; ptnr B kicks legs back, puts hands
on ptnr A's shoulder blades. Ptnr B
rotates to one side - if right, crossface
w/left arm, elbow in, crossface up &
away, spin behind to secure TD

Divide into weight group partners
1.) Top man - hand that is on bottom
man's elbow reaches under to grab the
far arm above the elbow. Top man-drop
chest and shoulder into armpit. With
other hand grab near shoelace.
2.) Drive w/legs, holding on to far arm
3.) Slip arm behind ptnr's head as he
rolls to his back for rev. half nelson.
Grasp far elbow w/palm downward

live wrestling match.

one 30 second period. From neutral position
try to pin opponent.

Partners - when doing moves should give
less than 50% resistance.
Defensive partner needs to lean over as

Lesson Focus: Teach inside leg stand up in
3 steps. Make sure top man is in proper ref's
position and follows bottom man up on stand
up
Closure: How many points for an escape?
When you escape, what position do you end
up in?
CUE PHRASES/INSTRUCTIONS
Step 1) Bottom man - inside leg and
arm clear across the body. Other hand
grasp top man's hand on your waist.
Bottom is on one knee.
Step 2) Rotate up to standing position,
top man follows
Step 3) Peel hand away from waist,
rotate opposite shoulder back into top
man and face him in neutral position

wrestling match.
ACTIVITIES
Intro: Review stand up
Fitness: W.U. and stretch
Lesson Focus: After warm ups, have
students pair up according to weight and
wrestle three 30 second periods
Closure: Do you see how the moves you've
been taught are linked together?
CUE PHRASES/INSTRUCTIONS
Rolls, cartwheels, duck walk w/ ptner
1st period - begin neutral position. If
takedown is achieved, start on feet again
2nd period - begin in ref's position. If
opponent is pinned, start again in same
ref's position, if escape or reversal is
achieved keep wrestling.
3rd period - switch ref's position.

CUE PHRASES/INSTRUCTIONS
Tie ups- should be forehead to forehead
not ear to ear. One hand on neck, other
hand on opponent's bicep. Push & pull,
Duck under - push opponent's bicep up,
duck under and step w/outside foot. As
you step, pull down and past you w/
opponent's head.
Half nelson counter - defensive man
peels the half nelson off as he looks and
sits away from half nelson.
Sumo Contest-pair up by weight.
Wrestlers try to take each other out of
the circle or down to the mat. Winner
stays in.

in their own circle for safety.
Closure: Try to remember what you've been
taught because you'll use it beginning
tomorrow in the class tournament.

tournament, so get a good night's sleep.

Last round of class tournament
Closure: Congratulations!! You have just
competed in one of the most difficult sports
there is. I'm proud of each and every one of
you and the effort you gave. Hopefully
you'll want to continue to wrestle as you
continue on in school.
CUE PHRASES/INSTRUCTIONS
Invite parents to come for last round of
tournament. If possible, get medals for
winners and give a copy of weight class
bracket along w/medal. Have coaches
referee final matches.
