ALA Development Team Leader

Role Overview:

The Atlas of Living Australia (ALA) is world-leading eResearch infrastructure which is in partnership with

CSIRO (host agency), Australian Museums and Herbaria and other biological collections to develop and maintain a platform to aggregate and deliver Australia’s biodiversity data holdings. The ALA is a team of approximately 25 staff and is primarily funded through the National Collaborative Research

Infrastructure Strategy (NCRIS), administered by the Department of Education.

The ALA is seeking experienced Applications Developers to manage and undertake project technical planning, analysis, design and programming tasks contributing to the development and maintenance of various ALA applications.

They are responsible for the quality of the service delivered to the project. The Senior Applications

Developer will lead the development of solutions design, architecture and frameworks. They will be working to the Lead Developer in regards to overall systems design and implementation.

Developers are required with a range of skills to develop and manage web application software.

Developers will participate in a variety of ALA components, including:

Development of web applications to present biodiversity information to specific audiences.

Development of interfaces between ALA components.

Development of repository and search capabilities.

Development of Android and IOS web apps.

They are client focused and gain support of key customers and are able to integrate business

requirements with technical solutions in order to achieve project objectives.

The successful candidate will need proven experience and capability in design and service delivery that supports ALA’s strategic and operational objectives. As a member of a small but dedicated and talented team they will need to demonstrate high levels of technical skill, cooperative problem solving skills, initiative and independence. Ideally candidates will also have a strong background in biodiversity informatics with experience in species taxonomy and related issues.

Duties and Key Result Areas:

Work as part of a multi-disciplinary, often regionally dispersed team, to carry out tasks in support of objectives and scientific research.

Work collaboratively with colleagues within your team, the business unit and across CSIRO, to reach objectives.

Participate in cooperative problem solving.

Lead the development of solutions design, architecture and frameworks.

Lead the development of the group’s application development standards.

Contribute to resource planning and work assignment among the development team.

Assume Scrum Master responsibility as part of the Agile development environment.

Keep up-to-date with emerging IT trends and standards via formal and informal training and research to ensure an appropriate technical direction for the organisation.

Contribute positively to stimulate and promote a team approach, and develop sound working relationships with application users and business owners.

Complete assigned programming and analysis tasks as specified by due dates.

Co-ordinate and participate in code reviews and specification reviews.

Undertake unit testing of developed code and debug code.

Co-ordinate and produce technical specifications and architectural documentation.

Produce and maintain systems documentation.

Assist in the support for users of ALA systems.

Keep management and other team members informed of progress and issues.

Communicate effectively and respectfully with all staff, clients and suppliers in the interests of good business practice, collaboration and enhancement of CSIRO’s reputation.

As required, establish and lead effective teams, allocate and manage resources and take responsibility for strategic and operational plans for the service and undertake staff performance management and career development.

As required, choose appropriate management strategies and communication styles to maintain high levels of motivation and productivity, giving feedback for development purposes and providing support for improvement.

Adapt and/or develop original techniques/procedures/equipment/ concepts/ideas in support of existing and further research.

Selection Criteria:

Pre-Requisites:

Senior development experience in leading teams developing and building software applications.

Relevant tertiary qualifications in IT or related discipline and/or equivalent relevant work experience.

Essential Criteria:

1.

Demonstrated experience actively leading the design and implementation of web based solutions, with the ability to provide technical advice to team members, management and clients within an

Agile development environment.

2.

Excellent communication skills, including an ability to adapt communication style to a range of audiences, and work collaboratively across multi-disciplinary project teams and with external customers to solve issues in a cooperative manner.

3.

Demonstrated experience with one or more programming/scripting languages, preferably webbased including Java, Groovy, Scala, Javascript or other industry platforms.

4.

Demonstrated experience with one or more development frameworks or tools, such as Grails,

Spring MVC, JQuery, AngularJS, KnockoutJS or Git.

Desirable Criteria:

1.

Experience with GIS mapping tools GeoServer, MapServer, OpenLayers or other OGC Standards based applications, Java Swing UI; and building mobile applications for IOS and Android.

2.

Experience with Biodiversity data standards including TDWG standards, managing species related information, including details such as specimen and occurrence data, taxonomy and identification keys.
