VENDORS PLEASE COMPLETE AN ENTRY CARD FOR ALL SECTIONS - WITH FULL DETAILS AND IT IS IMPERATIVE TO HAVE YOUR CORRECT DETAILS REGARDING TB (PARISHES & TESTING DATES) AND YOU HAVE COMPLETED AN ENTRY CARD ESPECIALLY REGARDING YOUR FARM ASSURANCE STATUS. YOU MAY LOSE OUT ON PRICE IF YOU DO NOT SUPPLY THE RIGHT INFORMATION IMPORTANT NOTICE FARM ASSURANCE Due to the Farm assurance body unable to give us a real time database or actual up to date information on your assurance status we rely on YOU the producers to give us the correct information. Therefore if you present your cattle as farm assured when they are not this is a misdescription and you are representing your cattle fraudulently. When the animal gets to the abattoir they have specific outlets for these animals and often don’t for nonfarm assured stock so they deduct massively. This is due to the time and loss of animal to the batch that was bought for a specific job. They cannot be returned from an abattoir therefore you are in their hands. The deduction could be £150. Quality and type were the main problem. If it was a very good beast and was over 30months or not farm assured this decreased the price. Another issue is the dead weight centres pre booking cattle for up to 3 weeks in advance making less of a demand for cattle when numbers are in short supply. However we did get to 204p for a native breed steer. In the Bull section the same thing too small, the big, not farm assured, over 16months old or not finished. That about summed the entry up. Please contact us with your entries so that we can market your cattle to their best ability. Please look at the ages and ask our staff the best section to put them in, some of the over 30months beef would have been better sold in the cows and vice versa in the cows. TOP OF 8000 GNS – TWO MORE AT 7700 AND 7200! The Dispersal Sale of the entire milking portion of the Dunnerdale herd, the property of Doreen Boow and her son, Stephen of Corney Hall, Bootle, Millom, West Cumbria took place at Beeston Castle Auction, Cheshire on Friday, 28th February following the Western Holstein Club’s Monthly Show and Sale. It was a fantastic day! But it had all the right ingredients – dispersal, good health status including 4yr TB, cubicle housing, big production, super pedigrees and great cattle. Consequently there was a huge crowd at the sale with a big presence from Scotland, the North of England and West Wales but the cattle generally were distributed over a wide area including Devon, Northern Ireland and Southern Ireland. The sale can trace its pedigree history back to the nineties and since then three main families – Aldina, Pretzel and Sabrina – have developed and accounted for over half the sale cattle and all three trace back to cows that were purchased as embryos from deep North American cow families. The production attributes were phenomenal with the cows averaging almost 11000 kg at 4.27% butterfat and 3.27% protein with cell counts at 117. At the last recording before the sale the average daily yield was 37.5 kg. Trade was great from start to finish achieving a wonderful average of £2874 for the whole herd. Within that average it is interesting to note that the 28 oldest cows – all fourth calf or older and up to tenth calvers averaged £2025 which is incredible and all the heifers that have calved since August averaged a staggering £3881 for 28. Another incredible stat – 37 animals sold for 3000 gns or more which is almost a third of the herd! Eight animals made 5000 gns or more selling to a top of 8000 gns and three of these, including the top seller, were purchased by Terry Parkin who was buying for his Barnard Herd based at Marwood, Barnard Castle, Co Durham. The top seller was the glorious heifer Dunnerdale Windbrook Sabrina 2nd who has five straight Excellent dams and six Excellent sisters and is a grand daughter of the 110 tonne foundation cow and whose dam was the 120 tonne Integrity Sabrina (Ex947E & SP). Also joining the Barnard Herd are two members of the Pretzel family and both were out of 8 generation VG/EX dams who were maternal sisters. 7 Selling for 7200 gns (third highest price) was Dunnerdale Steady Pretzel (VG86-2yr) who calved last August and was out of a VG87-2yr Goldwyn whilst Lauthority Pretzel (VG85-2yr), whose dam was an Ex90-2E Talent, sold for 4000 gns. The fourth heifer joining the Barnard Herd was Dunnerdale Fever Aldina (VG86-2yr) who sold for 5900 gns. The second top seller was another Sabrina by Windbrook; this was the third last heifer to be sold and was Dunnerdale Windbrook Sabrina 4th. Her dam was a 6th generation straight Excellent daughter by Goldwyn who has already bred 16000 kg Ex90 daughter. She sold for 7700 gns and sold to James McNeil for his Cairnpat Herd based at Lochans, Stranraer. Mr. McNeil purchased purchased a super group of cattle and they also included the Gillette Jordan Heifer Dunnerdale Jordan Sabrina 2nd at 5900 gns and Dunnerdale Sid Kay at 4000 gns. Another making its way to Stranraer was Dunnerdale Talent Sabrina 6th (GP84-2yr)(VG86-MS) purchased by Robert Agnew, Kirkholm. Purchasing for their much respected Carmarthen based Feithy Herd were Messrs. ER & ME Jones who parted with 5100 gns for the outstanding second calver Dunnerdale Sahara Kit Kat (VG86-2yr & SP) who was fresh with her second having given over 10800 kg as a heifer. The only other at 5000 gns was Dunnerdale Sahara Sabrina (VG85 2yr) who has 5 Excellent dams and is due in early May with her second to Velthuis Let It Snow. She was purchased by C & AJ Woodhouse of Millom, Cumbria. The very last lot in the sale was Dunnerdale Fever Sabrina 3rd who was very fresh having calved at under two; this was another great cow making heifer and sold for 4700 gns to R.Kellett of Hexham, Northumberland. Leading the prices of the older cows was Dunnerdale Goldwyn Pretzel 2nd (LP60)(EX94-4E & SP), a sixth calver back in-calf for September to Airintake, who sold for 4200 gns to Thomas Stephenson of Ulverston, Cumbria. The only other over 4000 was Dunnerdale Toystory Sabrina 2nd (VG88-3yr & SP) a second calver back incalf with her third to Lauthority for September sold for 4100 to Bryce Sloan of Auchinlech, Ayrshire. This was a great sale of a wonderful herd of cows which sold readily to a huge audience of keen and active bidders. They gathered in great numbers no doubt helped by the fact that Beeston Castle is so easily accessible from every direction. Judge for the show was Blaise Tomlinson of the Sandyford Herd based at Nanpantan, Leicestershire and for his Champion he chose Bidlea Matson Darkie a second calver by Autumn Ridge Matson from Ray Brown and Partners, Holmes Chapel. In reserve was Winton Toystory Cissie, a fresh heifer by Jenny-Lou Marshl Toystory from Peter Waring of Beverley, East Yorkshire. A huge crowd was in attendance, no doubt helped by the inclusion of the dispersal sale of the Dunnerdale milking portion (see separate report) and which no doubt helped to elevate the trade to a very good average. There were some high individual prices and the star of the sale was Sterndale Golden Ashlyn (VG86-2yr) from Bill Nadin of Earl Sterndale, Buxton, a second calf daughter of Golden-Oaks St Alexander who had calved four weeks and was sold giving 36.0 kg. She was purchased by an undisclosed breeder in Northern Ireland. Three fresh heifers crashed through the £3k barrier. First at this price was Bestfed Fever Robin 2nd ET, a Crackholm Fever daughter bred from 12 generations of VG/EX dams tracing back to the noted Glenridge Citation Roxy (Ex90-4E). She was consigned by Paul Findley of Marchwiel, Wrexham and sold to R & E Butterfield for 3800 gns for their Ingleview Herd based at Bentham, Lancashire. Next at 3500 gns was Rusholme Jordan Frantoosh ET, a daughter of Gillette Jordan bred from 10 generations of Very Good or Excellent dams from the Quality Fran line. She was consigned by Andrew Kippax of Garstang and sold to P & A Mercer for their Sandringham Herd based at Malpas, Cheshire. The third heifer over 3000 was Enchanted End Story Ghost from Enchanted Holsteins of Elswick, Preston. She too had a great pedigree being bred from 8 generations of cows in the top two grades as well as having two VG sisters. She sold for 3200 gns to Andrew and Alison Bunting of Newabbey Holsteins, Dumfries. Not far behind was another from the Sterndale stable; Sterndale Liqueur Brenda (VG852yr), a November calved heifer by the home bred Shottle son, Sterndale Liqueur. She sold for 2900 gns 8 to JV & JE Allen, Tutbury, Burton-on-Trent for their Leaventhorpe Herd. A small group of in-calf heifers sold up to 1950 gns twice for daughters of Toystory from the Harris family of Hampshire and Carhall Golddust from the Kinsey’s of Stoak, Chester. All the maiden heifers were from the Chalkfarm Herd of Messrs. JF Temple & Son Ltd., of Wells-next-the-Sea, Norfolk and sold up to 1300 gns for a 14 month old Shottle daughter.
