To: Ramapo Faculty From: Gen Ed Task Force 2 Date: March 16, 2015 Re: Languages & GE Language requirements and General Education The following situates Ramapo College’s language requirements in the context of comparable institutions. Including a language course in general education is quite common. COLLEGE-WIDE REQUIREMENTS AT RAMAPO AND COMPARABLE INSTITUTIONS: COLLEGE-WIDE LANGUAGE REQUIREMENT Suny Genesco: All students Intermediate 1 proficiency Intermediate 1 level proficiency William Patterson University: Eastern CT State 2 years, may use language courses taken in HS University: Sonoma State 2 years in one language University: Mass. College of the Gen ed. requires of all students second semester Liberal Arts: elementary level proficiency. Some majors have additional courses. English and Psychology majors for example. Midwestern State Univ: 2 years for Majors in School of Humanities & Social Sciences; varies for others Southern Oregon Univ: Two semesters, only required of those admitted without the required language study in H.S. St. Mary’s College of 1 course Maryland: U of Maine at Minimum of 2 HS years or 2 college semesters of 1 Farmington: language. More required for some majors. Univ. of Mary Washington: Univ. of Minnesota, Morris: U of VA, College at Wise: U of Wisconsin, Superior: Completion of 202 level course or equivalent proficiency 2 courses in a single language 2 courses in one language 2 semesters of coursework in 1 language, or the equivalent 2 LANGUAGE AS OPTION TO FULFILL A REQUIREMENT Mansfield University: 2 consecutive language courses or 2 world culture courses Southern Utah 1 course in Humanities where language is an option University: LANGUAGE AS REQUIREMENT IN SELECT PROGRAMS 3 semesters for School of Humanities, The College of New 2 semesters for sciences (except nursing and computer Jersey: science), Arts and Communications, 2 semesters except Music, School of Business, only Economics majors, Education, no requirement Georgia College & State Humanities majors 2 years, Univ.: Sciences 1 year Henderson State 4 semesters for Communication, Theater, Music, University: English, Psychology, history, political science, sociology; Math and Science choose one course between philosophy and languages Shepherd University: 4 semesters for BA in English, History, Psychology, Communications and 6 semesters for Vocal Music History and Literature have requirement (4 semesters) Stockton University: New College of Florida: Varies by major (concentration). Ramapo College of NJ: 3 semesters required for majors in SSHGS University of Montevallo: Students earning a BA must complete 4 semester sequence in a foreign language. Keene State College: 2 semesters required for students in School of Arts & Humanities 2 semesters sciences, 4 semesters Arts and Humanities 2 semesters in one language in English, Business, Anthropology and other majors can have more. Gen ed. has language as an option.
