Create a bug hunting kit, observe a praying mantis egg sac and watch “baby bugs” emerge. Discover how honeybees do more than make honey and how the elephant is a sustainable resource. Topics include: hand building with pinch pots and coil methods, slab construction, texture engraving and glazing/painting. Some potential projects we will do: puffer fish, jewelry box, bird house, self portrait mask, creature sculptures, luminaria/incense holder using cookies cutters. The pieces will be fired off site by the teacher at his kiln, then returned to class when ready. Our goal is for everyone to take 5-7 finished pieces showing the natural creativity and imagination of students in each art piece. Learn the fun dance moves that are featured on television shows, movies, music videos, and commercials. Wanna Hip Hop incorporates unique moves and fancy footwork. Learn how to interpret the music and showcase your own individual style. Then, perform for family and friends in our End-of-Session Performance (props and partial costumes provided). We want you to come out to train, play and enjoy the world’s greatest game with friends! This soccer class is a game-based program loaded with fun activities! The children will have the opportunity to learn skills and learn team play while playing soccer related games. Each student will receive one Pro Dri-Fit training jersey as well! Tennis 1:35-2:35pm Gr.1-6 Instructor: Goleta Valley Tennis Association- Peter Location: Blacktop Lessons cover the basics of tennis-ground strokes, volleys, serves and game rules and strategy-presented in an engaging and energetic format. Students move thru drills and games created to provide repetitive practice of the skills demonstrated over the class session. Classes will be taught by Peter Gerstenfeld and/or an assistant tennis instructor using a portable net set up on a designated blacktop area. Children should wear athletic shoes and comfortable clothing to participate. Running Club 1:35-2:45pm (70 min) Gr.1-6 Instructor: Becky Aaronson Location: Rose Garden Join the fun this fall and become a member of the Roosevelt Running Club. Kids can expect an energizing hour plus of running, relays, and obstacle courses, all geared toward helping them build confidence and endurance. They will learn the fundamentals of running, stretching and being part of a team, and they will master the skills necessary to comfortably compete in a 1-mile race at the end of the season. Most of all they will have fun! Kids of all abilities are encouraged to join this supportive group and will be excited by the many motivational prizes, ribbons and awards they can earn along the way as well as the end-of-season celebration and raffle giveaway. The Running Club is all about "Kids Celebrating Fun, Fitness and Friendship" and includes coaching, motivational speakers, tons of great prizes as well as a healthy snack. Have you ever wanted to create animations, video games, or even your own virtual world? The sky’s the limit with MIT’s fun, kidfriendly programming tool, Scratch. By snapping a few colorful blocks together onscreen, you can create interactive projects that will make your friends and family say “Wow!” Plus, you view other kids’ projects and share your own on Scratch’s active online community! Scratch Superstars is taught by Roosevelt alumnus Anna Brewer, a SBHS Computer Science Academy member and NCWIT Award for Aspirations in Computing national runner-up with 6+ years of Scratch experience. Anna also co-founded the local coding outreach program Dream It, Code It, and this will be her third time teaching Scratch Superstars! Kids will have the opportunity to learn to play their favorite songs and music on electric keyboards. Radio hits, movie and television themes are made so easy, that our participants will be playing them after the very first class! The club is a combination of keyboard piano lessons and a music learning workshop, which uses a clever visual method to teach the basics of music reading and piano playing. We have developed lots of learning games and activities designed to instruct students in the fundamentals of music theory, in ways that are fun, engaging, and stimulating. We want our students to stay motivated and continue to want to learn to play music, whether they like Michael Jackson or Taylor Swift, the Black Eyed Peas or Beethoven. We have music form Wizards of Waverly Place, Star Wars, Harry Potter, Indiana Jones, Sponge Bob, Phineas & Ferb and more. This session is for both new beginners and students who participated in our spring program.
