Course Synopsis:
Athletic Leadership 11 is designed to give students the opportunity to develop their individual and
collective sense of social responsibility through the acquisition of leadership skills and theory specific to
the field of athletics. Students will develop practical skills relating to coaching, officiating, athletic injuries,
and event management. Students will have opportunities to practice and improve these skills through
involvement in school and community athletics.

Rationale:
This course is designed to give students opportunities to be involved in sport, not only as the athlete.
Recognizing that numerous students have interest to serve as officials, managers and coaches, this
course will provide students with the necessary skills and practice opportunities. Connections will be
made with local elementary and middle school, as well as applicable professional organizations to carry
out course objectives. Community involvement is rooted in the culture at Princess Margaret Secondary
and this course will offer another component to the existing Public Service Academy.

Unit/Topic/Module Descriptions:
Unit 1:
Leadership
Overview: This unit will provide students with leadership and teaching skills that will enable them to
teach movement skills to elementary students.
Learning Outcomes
 Students will be able to create safe games where children can practice fundamental
movement skills.
 Students will be able to model responsible behaviour in a leadership role.
 Students will be able to lead children in activities that will promote the development of
fundamental movement skills.
Unit 2:
Sports Officiating
Overview: This unit will begin to examine the theory and practical knowledge of Officiating.
Learning Outcomes
 Students will be able to keep score of basketball and volleyball games using official score
sheets and score clocks.
 Students will be able to understand the rules of basketball and volleyball.
 Students will be able to officiate basketball and volleyball games using proper mechanics.
Unit 3:
Athletic Training
Overview: This unit will begin to examine the care and management of athletic injuries.
Learning Outcomes:
 Students will be able to assess, evaluate, and respond to an athletic injury.
 Students will be able to demonstrate an understanding of injury rehabilitation.
 Students will be able to demonstrate a practical application of injury prevention in athletics.
Unit 4:
Event Management/Marketing
Overview: This unit will focus on the planning, co-ordination and execution of athletic events.
Learning Outcomes:
 Students will be able to understand the steps required to effectively plan an event.
 Students will be able to co-ordinate and management resources to run a successful event.
 Students will be able to assess the success of an event and become aware of steps for
improvement.

Unit 5:
Coaching
Overview: This unit will begin to examine being a coach of young athletes
Learning Outcomes:
 Students will be able to exhibit the ability to plan, deliver and evaluate a practice
 Students will be able to communicate effectively to young athletes
 Students will be able to evaluate their strengths and weaknesses as a coach
 Students will be able to summarize the concepts and principles of training
Unit 6:
Careers in Athletics
Overview: This unit will provide students with opportunities to explore possible careers in athletics and
recreation.
Learning Outcomes:
 Students will be able to demonstrate a knowledge of the educational training required for
particular careers.
 Students will be able to explain characteristics of chosen careers.
 Students will be able to initiate relationships with professional/educators in the
athletic/recreation field.
Instructional Component:
1. Classroom based learning sessions (lecture, discussion, peer instruction, guest seminars)
2. Practical activity sessions (officiating practice, first aid, athletic injuries, student teaching)
3. School/Community Service (elementary school teaching, coaching, officiating, score keeping)
