WEBSITE CONTENT Our Commitment to Green Events Facilitated through partnership with St. Louis Earth Day and their Recycling On the Go event-greening program (www.stlouisearthday.org). Introduction: [Event name/organizing group] is committed to incorporating sustainable practices to reduce the environmental impact of this year’s event. Our goal this year is to [summarize areas of sustainability, such as “Our goal for 2013 is to reduce our energy consumption and send less waste to area landfills.”]. To date, we have diverted [fill in data from ROG Event Reports from previous years or omit if this is the first year] from area landfills by collecting recyclable [and compostable] materials from both event attendees and vendors. The following is an example that appears on www.stlouisearthday.org to describe “Event Sustainability” at the St. Louis Earth Day Festival. You, too, should highlight your achievements and goals in the following areas, as applicable. Please see Green Event Toolkit for a comprehensive guide to how you can incorporate sustainable measures under each of the following categories. Leading by example for events in the St. Louis region. St. Louis Earth Day is committed to providing the highest level of environmental stewardship possible at our Festival. We set the bar for sustainability through the following actions: 4168 Juniata Street, Suite 4 St. Louis, MO 63116 314.282.SLED www.stlouisearthday.org Page 2 of 6 © St. Louis Earth Day 2010, 2012, 2013, 2014 Event Vendors & Purchasing: We use locally-owned businesses and vendors for our rentals, services and product purchases whenever possible. Our recycled stock print materials are Forest Stewardship Council (FSC). Our local printer, The Advertisers Printing Company, uses soy and solvent-free inks and emission-free coatings. They hold Rainforest Alliance and Sustainable Green Printing Partnership (SGP) certifications and offset 100% of their energy use through Ameren Missouri’s PurePower program. Merchandise: T-Shirt and water bottle sales help sustain St. Louis Earth Day programs. T-Shirts: Event t-shirts are either 100% organic cotton or an organic cotton/post-consumer P.E.T. recycled polyester blend, printed locally by Regal Midwest ($15). Water Bottles: Recyclable AND made from Recycled-content. BPA-free. THE alternative to bottled water. (Bottled water is banned at the St. Louis Earth Day Festival, and there are plenty of facilities for eventgoers to refill their water bottles.) Available as an Earth Day Challenge prize or for purchase at the Info Booth ($3). Our Earth Day Challenge awards eco-friendly gifts like CFLs, Dr. Bronner’s and reusable bags while encouraging attendees to make positive environmental behavior changes, all of which have been donated by Earth Day vendors and sponsors. They showcase green products and services available in the area. Education: A lot of consideration is devoted to selecting the educational exhibitors that will provide programming at each Festival. Event-attendees can learn everything from how to create works of art (Teachers’ Recycle Center) and fun items like cigar box guitars (Green Strum Project) and kaleidoscopes (SCOSaG), to how to create natural habitat or conservation projects in your own back yard (MO Dept. of Conservation, Deer Creek Watershed Alliance and MO DNR). Attendees young and old have learned about where their food comes from (Chipotle Cinema, SlowFoods and the Eastern Missouri Beekeeping Association), how to interact with wild animals in a respectful manner (Wildlife Center of Missouri) and how to complete home improvements to increase energy efficiency and conservation (Ameren Missouri and EarthWays Center)… and so much more! Waste: Recycling and compost services are available to everyone who comes to the Festival, sponsored by our Recycling On the Go program. By implementing our event-greening Recycling On the Go program, 89% of the waste produced at the 2011 Festival was diverted from the landfill (49 4168 Juniata Street, Suite 4 St. Louis, MO 63116 314.282.SLED www.stlouisearthday.org Page 3 of 6 © St. Louis Earth Day 2010, 2012, 2013, 2014 cubic yards)! Thanks to Blue Skies Recycling, St. Louis Composting and Republic Services for hauling the waste our volunteers sort! DO YOUR PART: Take your waste to one of the five Recycling Stations where volunteers will help you figure out what is recyclable, compostable or headed for the landfill. St. Louis Earth Day always reuses what it can from year to year to reduce waste and expense. We educate our vendors, particularly the food vendors, to reinforce our commitment to minimizing waste. Food vendors are required to use recyclable or compostable disposables and we ask vendors to limit handouts. You can do your part by recycling your Festival program as you leave. All left-over food is donated to Operation Food Search. Styrofoam is so last century – that’s why we’ve banned polystyrene/#6 plastic from the Festival for the past six years and have never looked back. This material is rarely recycled and never breaks down in a landfill. Our portable toilets from Johnny On the Spot use eco-friendly chemicals and all of the paper products are made from post-consumer recycled content. Their primo solar cabanas will be making an appearance at this year’s event. Food: Food vendors are required to use recyclable or compostable disposables and participate in the recycling/compost program. They are encouraged to use natural, organic, and local ingredients. All food vendors are required to submit a healthy menu for review. No high-fructose corn syrup or trans-fats allowed! Vegetarian and vegan options are highly recommended for inclusion in every menu. We are grateful to our food vendors for their cooperation! Energy: Our generators, donated by Fabick Power Systems, are powered by Biofuel. We also have three solar systems on site – from HomeEco, Second Sun and Advanced Energy Solutions – which power nearby booths. The energy used to power the Festival has been offset 100% with emission-free Missouri Wind Energy Certificates courtesy of Ameren Missouri’s Pure Power program. This offset is the equivalent of preventing 3167 tons of carbon dioxide from entering the atmosphere – the same environmental benefit as not driving a car for 3 months. You can sign your home up for the Pure Power program or inquire about Pure Power for your business in the Energy Neighborhood! Transportation: Although we have offset all attendees’, vendors’ and entertainers’ travel with Missouri Wind Energy Certificates through Pure Power, we strongly urge Festival attendees to use alternative transport or carpool. The Festival site is within walking distance from the Forest Park/DeBaliviere Metrolink station and is easily accessible by bus and bike. The Festival is ½ mile from the Forest Park/DeBaliviere Metrolink station, from which folks can hop on the Forest Park Trolley or walk/bike. 4168 Juniata Street, Suite 4 St. Louis, MO 63116 314.282.SLED www.stlouisearthday.org Page 4 of 6 © St. Louis Earth Day 2010, 2012, 2013, 2014 Trailnet will offer FREE valet bike parking all day to encourage seasoned and “green” cyclists alike to ride in. Stop by theTrailnet booth in the Transportation Neighborhood to learn all about why commuter cycling is viable in our region! St. Louis Earth Day, the City of St. Louis and Lambert Airport have partnered up to offer free shuttle service to the event site the Recycling Extravaganza Park N’ Ride at the St. Louis Community College, Forest Park Campus. The shuttles are powered by biodiesel or clean-burning Compressed Natural Gas (CNG). Don’t wait in an idling car to get a nearby parking space! Take the shuttle! Shuttles run every 15 minutes on the hour, from 10:30am – 6:30pm and will drop off/pick up attendees at the edge of the Transportation Neighborhood. (See “planning your visit” for further details.) STAGE ANNOUNCEMENTS The following are suggested outlines for making announcements in order to educate and encourage event-goers to participate in making your event the greenest yet! (1) Help us make the [event name] a green one by recycling your waste today! Place your paper, plastics (but no #6!), aluminum and glass into the blue-topped bins throughout the grounds. With your help, we can keep as much as 80% of the beverage containers consumed here from ending up in landfills. With deep gratitude, St. Louis Earth Day thanks its sponsors who have made greener St. Louis events possible, especially the St. Louis-Jefferson Solid Waste Management District. (2) Did you know that when St. Louis Earth Day’s Recycling On the Go brought their blue-topped bins to the [event name] last year, [fill in data from ROG Event Reports from previous years or omit if this is the first year] pounds of recyclable material was diverted from landfills? This year you can help by placing your paper, plastics (but no #6!), aluminum and glass into the bins labeled throughout the grounds. (3) Thank you for helping to make this year’s [event name] environmentally-friendly! St. Louis Earth Day is proud to bring you their award-winning Recycling On the Go program, but success depends on you! Place your paper, plastics (but no #6!), aluminum and glass into the bluetopped bins throughout the grounds so we can keep as many items out of the landfills as possible! (4) St. Louis Earth Day’s Recycling On the Go program is working hard to green events in the St. Louis area, and you can help today by placing your recyclable materials in the blue-topped bins. Paper, plastic, aluminum and glass are accepted. Most plastics are accepted but unfortunately your #6 cups will have to go into the trash cans. (Look for the number between the recycling arrows, usually at the bottom of your cup.) (5) [EVENTS WITH WASTE STATIONS] Don’t forget to help us keep [location] clean and [event] green by bringing your waste to the sorting stations located throughout the Festival. Volunteers will help you sort compost, recycling and landfill materials. With your help, we can divert 90% of the event waste from ending up in area landfills. Thank you! 4168 Juniata Street, Suite 4 St. Louis, MO 63116 314.282.SLED www.stlouisearthday.org Page 5 of 6 © St. Louis Earth Day 2010, 2012, 2013, 2014 PRESS RELEASES Paragraph 1 (3-4 sentences): Vital where/when/what information about your event. Highlight green goals and connection with St. Louis Earth Day’s Recycling On the Go program only if you are working with us. Paragraph 2-3 (3-5 sentences each): More details about your event and/or your event’s efforts to green operations. Paragraph 4: Since the beginning of the program in 2007, approximately 241 tons of materials, including recyclables, organic waste and cooking oil, have been diverted from area landfills. Recycling On the Go has enhanced the waste management of 336 events (656 event days), exposing approximately 4.8 million people to recycling when away from home. St. Louis Earth Day is a non-profit 501c3 organization whose mission is to make every day earth day by cultivating environmental stewardship and engaging individuals, governments, businesses, schools and the non-profit sector in celebration, education and action to support a healthy and sustainable future. Find out more at www.stlouisearthday.org. Paragraph 5: Include information about the organizing group and/or the history of the festival and how people can find out more about the event or participation. This may be a good time to mention volunteer opportunities to help with the recycling crew! 4168 Juniata Street, Suite 4 St. Louis, MO 63116 314.282.SLED www.stlouisearthday.org Page 6 of 6 © St. Louis Earth Day 2010, 2012, 2013, 2014 EVENT PROGRAM For the event program, you should include details about what service is available to visitors; such as, what is recyclable and what is not and where patrons can find recycling and/or compost receptacles. Also, use the program as an opportunity to advertise your green goals. With two weeks advanced notice, we can provide you with an ad that promotes the program and explains how to participate. See example on the left. We can also help you design content that specifically identifies what is recyclable and/or compostable and where to take the waste and highlight other green features of your event. 4168 Juniata Street, Suite 4 St. Louis, MO 63116 314.282.SLED www.stlouisearthday.org
