Landing safe. 25 Sep 1997 NEW ORLEANS, USA TWA MD83 from St.Louis to New Orleans, USA with 130 pax overran wet runway on landing, getting stuck in the mud. Normal deplaning, no damages, no injuries. 1 Sep 1997 SEATTLE, USA Alaska MD82 from Los Angeles to Seattle, USA with 111 pax had nose gear collapse and slide in slowed down landing roll out. 15 pax got cuts and bruises in slide evacuation; Seattle-Tacoma airport was closed down for 10 minutes. 9 Aug 1997 ALICANTE, SPAIN Finnair MD83 from Helsinki, Finland to Alicante, Spain with 156 pax was hit by hail-storm when descending through 29,000 ft. Windshield cracked and nose radome was damaged beyond repair. Emergency extension was selected, which leaves gear doors open. Doors hit runway, sending debris into left engine. Damage extensive, no report on casualties. 9 Jul 1997 BALTIMORE, USA Air Aruba MD83 from Aruba to Newark, USA diverted to Baltimore/Washington and was boarded by police to keep angry pax on the plane and out of the cockpit after more than two hours waiting on ground. 17 Jun 1997 LAS VEGAS, USA Reno Air MD83 from Las Vegas to Colorado Springs, USA with 140 pax had left engine failure within seconds after take-off. Engine cowling was punched and aircraft structures had minor damages, but flight returned to Las Vegas uneventfully without anybody injured. 13 May 1997 NEW YORK, USA Delta MD88 at New York/La Guardia, USA, boarding for Dallas was hit at right wing by an 18-wheel tire-delivery truck, pushing the plane 1.5 m off the jetway tube at gate. One of the 106 pax stepped into the gap, fell to the ground and got hurt. 8 May 1997 STAVANGER, NORWAY Scandinavian SAS MD81 from Stavanger to Bergen, Norway with 117 pax returned to base 14 minutes after takeoff after birdstrike killed one engine. No injuries. 28 Apr 1997 TUCSON, USA American MD82 from Tucson to Dallas, USA with 118 pax lost fan blade parts of left engine on take-off and got tailpipe fire. After return to Tucson, slide evacuation was stopped by fire-fighters who saw the blaze was out and the danger was over. Engine parts were found shattered in housing area near the airport. No injuries. 26 Apr 1997 ST LOUIS, USA American MD82/83 from Dallas to Chicago, USA with 105 pax diverted to St. Louis when a passenger's carry-on luggage leaked ammonia. Teary eyes, but no injuries. 10 Apr 1997 JOENSUU, FINLAND Sunways MD83 from Jyväskylä via Joensuu, Finland to Antalya, Turkey with 166 pax overran runway by 50 m when landing in Joensuu, ending up 10 m from airport security fence. No injuries. 4 Apr 1997 SAN JOSÉ, USA Reno Air MD83 from San Jos‚ to Las Vegas, USA with 111 pax near collision with Cessna 172 on take-off. The private plane got into the flight-path of the MD after taking off from a parallell runway. Distance between the planes reported to be less than 50 m. No injuries. 21 Mar 1997 SEYMOUR JOHNSON AFB, USA Delta MD88 from Washington D.C to Orlando, USA with 138 pax diverted to Seymour Johnson Air Force Base, when small electric fire caused cabin smoke. Emergency landing executed in 7 minutes. No injuries. 9 Mar 1997 KIRUNA, SWEDEN Scandinavian MD81 from Stockholm to Kiruna, Sweden with 151 pax skid off runway landing in heavy snow-storm, smoothly decelerating in 400 m in kneehigh snow and ending up in a snowdrift. Communication between ATC and pilots was found inadequate, causing landing in crosswind component beyond limits. 5 Mar 1997 CLEVELAND, USA American MD82 from Dallas to Cleveland, USA with 103 pax skid off runway on landing in snowy conditions, collapsing right main gear. Evacuation through slides, 5 injuries reported. 28 Feb 1997 ATLANTA, USA American MD82/83 from West Palm Beach to Chicago, USA encountered turbulence at 9,200 m over Atlanta. Six unbelted injured, among them flight attendants and people in the lavatories. DALLAS, USA American MD82/83 from Dallas to New York-La Guardia departed with 51 pax, and a mop-head inside right engine cowling. Mechanics found the mop after the plane had to turn back after a bird-strike. The airline encourages staff "not to leave things where they are not supposed to be". The mop never caused any danger. DALLAS, USA American MD82/83 from Dallas to New York-LaGuardia was near to collide with a United B737. Lining up for landing, the 737, flying in first, aborted approach. When ATC suggested the MD80 to do likewise, both planes got less than 20 m from eachother on ascent, at 600 m. 17 Feb 1997 NEW YORK, USA Continental MD82 from Denver to New York/Newark with 141 pax suffered nose gear collapse on landing in New York. No injuries, no emergency evacuation. 7 Feb 1997 NEW MEXICO AIRSPACE, USA American MD82/83 over New Mexico, USA got 5 kms from collision with two U.S Air Force F-16 straying away from training air space. Warning system alerted MD80 crew, who climbed to safer altitude. 10 Jan 1997 DALLAS, USA American MD82/83 from Richmond to Dallas, USA with 59 pax suffered hydraulic failure on landing in Dallas. Despite normal landing, the plane was evacuated due to smoke in the cabin. One minor injury. 7 Jan 1997 BERLIN, GERMANY Austrian MD87 from Berlin, Germany to Vienna, Austria with 28 pax was hijacked in Czech air-space by a 39-year-old Bosnian citizen, demanding to fly to the U.S or Switzerland after expiry of his German residence permit. The flight returned to Berlin, where a security guard entered the plane and threw the hijacker, armed with only a knife, out of the front door. Given a long sentence, the hijacker later took his life in a German prison 4 2 Jan 1997 RENO/LAKE TAHOE, USA Two Reno Air MD83 threatened by flooding Truckee River, while on ground at homebase in Reno/Lake Tahoe, USA. 12 Dec 1996 MADRID, SPAIN Iberia MD87 from Lisbon, Portugal to Madrid, Spain with 103 pax aquaplanned when landing in Madrid. The plane ran 50 m off the end of the runway with nose gear stuck in the mud. Nobody hurt; plane was evacuated because of a little smoke. 5 Dec 1996 COLORADO AIR SPACE, USA American MD82/83 from Dallas to Salt Lake City, USA with 69 pax got into rough turbulence at 7,000 m above Colorado injuring 16 persons onboard; two flight attendants most seriously injured. At 4,300 m above Lambourne, Essex, the KLM plane erroneously descended below its designated flight path 300 m higher. ATC alert avoided collision. 11 Nov 1996 CLEVELAND, USA Delta MD88 from Atlanta ran off winter-slippery runway on landing in Cleveland, USA. No injuries among 118 pax; minor damage to the plane. 4 Nov 1996 ZÜRICH, SWITZERLAND Austrian MD81 from Zurich to Vienna returned to airport after cabin door, not properly latched by a catering employee, blew open 3-4 cms during climb at 1,500 m. Landing complicated due to dense fog. No injuries. 2 Nov 1996 CALGARY, CANADA American MD82 in Calgary, Canada took off twice, both times with smoke of burned plastic in cabin. First return to base declared emergency, second time standard landing. No injuries. 1 Nov 1996 KAJAANI, FINLAND Sunways MD83 with 137 pax bound for Turkey returned to base after trying take-off with broken fan stage blade edge on #1 engine. The crew had flown the aircraft knowing of the engine failure from Turkey to Cologne, Germany and further ferried to Kajaani without any steps to repair the engine. 28 Oct 1996 NEW YORK, USA American MD82 from Chicago to New York diverted from LaGuardia airport to a longer runway of JFK international airport, when nose-gear did not deploy. Three slight injuries among 85 pax and crew of five. No fire when nose skidded along the asphalt. 19 Oct 1996 NEW YORK, USA Delta MD88 from Atlanta to New York hit approach light stanchion on stormy-weather landing at LaGuardia airport. Captain's non-authorized combo of contact lenses contributed to the accident, because his depth-vision was found inadequate. On touch-down the main gear collapsed, the plane skidded on its belly and turned about 180 degrees before halting. Out of 55 pax, four were slightly injured at evacuation. 13 Oct 1996 PRISTINA, YUGOSLAVIA Crossair MD82 got stuck in the mud after taxiing off taxiway after landing in Pristina, Yugoslavia. Right wingtip touched ground; recovery took two days. Lauderdale, USA had a near-miss with an American A300 at take-off. Delta crew initiated take-off roll too early due to confusion with another flight with same number, and managed to rotate less than 300 m away from the Airbus, in from Montego Bay, Jamaica, crossing the runway on taxiing to the terminal. 1 Jan 1996 TAMPA, USA Continental MD81 landed in Tampa, USA, after changes in cabin pressure at 9,500 m altitude.
