ANNA MACKEY : Physiotherapist
Anna Mackey is a Physiotherapy Practitioner in the Paediatric Orthopaedic
department; Starship Children’s Hospital and Honorary Research Fellow at
the University of Auckland. Anna completed a PhD (2005) and post doctoral
studies at the Department of Surgery, University of Auckland and worked as a
researcher and physiotherapist at the University of Auckland Gait Lab from
2001 to 2008. Her clinical and research interests include gait and
rehabilitation of children with developmental disabilities and upper limb motor
control in children with cerebral palsy.
MANDY BARNIER:
Physiotherapist
Graduate of Griffith University (Gold Coast, QLD Australia) Bachelor
Physiotherapy/Bachelor Exercise Science dual degree in 2004.
The majority of my clinical experience has been gained from working within
the specialist multidisciplinary team of the Statewide Paediatric Rehabilitation
Service at the Royal Children's Hospital in Brisbane managing children with
acquired brain injury, spinal cord injury and amputation, as well as cerebral
palsy and a variety of other neurological and neuromuscular conditions. I
worked routinely with orthotists and prosthetists within and external to this
service, particularly in my role designated to the Paediatric Limb Deficiency
and Amputee clinic at the Royal Children's Hospital, and Paediatric
Rehabilitation Outreach Service visiting rural communities across Queensland.
I moved to New Zealand and commenced employment with the Child
Rehabilitation Service at the Wilson Centre in January 2011, and Gait
Laboratory Service.
I’ve also completed the NSW University prosthetics course; and have had a
role in teaching assessment and management of spasticity and contracture in
the child with cerebral palsy at various centres across QLD.
MARK LEONIDA: Dip. O.P. T. E. C,
HPC MBAPO Specialist Orthotist
Mark graduated from the Marylebone School of Orthotics & Prosthetics in
1986 and specialising in Paediatric Neuro-Orthopaedics in South East
Thames area.
After his initial experience with orthotics in New Zealand in 1989-90, he
returned to the UK where his career led him to Queen Marys University
hospital, leading the Diabetic Foot regional clinic, this included working with a
group of regional specialists in Rehabilitation services for many years.
Included in this was working with “The One Small Step Gait Lab” for 10 years
at Guy’s Hospital.
In 2000, after identifying his interest in sports injuries, Mark, later founded and
became Clinical Director of the “Technology in Motion” private biomechanics
clinic, where he spent several years assessing first division football players
and undertook assessments for RFU members. He introduced the use of
force-plate and video analysis into the clinics for all biomechanical
assessments.
Although, still clinical director and owner of Motionlab Ltd , he returned to New
Zealand in 2009, to relax and enjoy the country he loved for so many years
and has accepted the role of Clinical Manager at the Orthotic Centre, where
he concentrates on client services and manufacturing Specialised Orthotics.

2. Describe a musculoskeletal physical examination used as part of the gait
assessment
3. Discuss orthotic solutions for common paediatric and adult gait disorders
4. Complete a standardized 2-D gait analysis
5. Apply principles of gait assessment and orthotic prescription to case examples
8.45 Registration
9.15 Welcome Address
Morning session:
9.30 -10.30 Presentation 1: Normal gait
Led by Anna Mackey
This talk will summarise the history of gait assessment, three dimensional gait analysis
and normal gait biomechanics, including the joint range and muscle action at each stage of
the gait cycle. Some key ‘gait patterns’ for a range of gait disorders will be presented.
10.30-10.45 Morning Tea
10.45 – 11.30 Presentation 2: Assessment techniques & tools

This presentation will introduce the terminology and techniques of a musculoskeletal
assessment that can be used in conjunction with gait assessment measures. The principles
of completing a 2-D gait assessment will be discussed and other tools for assessing
parameters of gait will be presented.
11.30-12.30 Presentation 3: Types and principles of orthotics
Led by Mark Leonida
This section of the day draws together the theory from the first two lectures, to build a
confident and practical solution for your clients and the componentry and design of
orthoses necessary to overcome their biomechanical deficits.
1. Topics to include: joint ranges and their effect on other parts of the gait process
2. pathways to additional clinical input for improved outcomes
3. designs of lower limb orthotics
4. changing parameters for different conditions and the orthotic consequences.
