Syllabus
This is an introductory course in microeconomics. The focus will be on the economic
decisions of individual people and firms, the determination of prices and quantities of
individual goods, wages for various classes of workers. It is required for any student
wishing to major or minor in business or economics. No prior knowledge of economics
is required but a reasonable degree of comfort with algebra and geometry will be extremely
helpful. Discussion of examples and policies will focus on the U.S economy, although
most of the analysis is transferable to other economies.
The website for the book (http://mankiw.swlearning.com) has a lot of resources including
notes on PowerPoint slides, quizzes etc. You can print out the PowerPoint slides and
bring them to class and then take notes on them. This makes taking notes a lot easier and
allows you to concentrate on understanding the materials.
II. Required text:
Principles of Microeconomics by N.G. Mankiw (Fifth edition). You can buy the e-book
from the above website which costs a lot less than the paper version.
III. Evaluations
There will be four exams (25% each). Exams are not cumulative. All exams are closed
book and closed notes. We will discuss more about the structure of the exams in class.
Midterm exams will be in class. Final exam will be according to the university schedule.
There will not be any make up exams except for extremely unusual circumstances. So
please make sure you take all the exams. If you do not take an exam your score for that
exam will be zero.
Exam Schedule and coverage (tentative)
Exam 1 (July 18th, Monday): Chapter1 to chapter 6
Exam 2 (July 26th, Tuesday): Chapter 7 to Chapter 12
Exam 3 (August 3rd, Wednesday): chapter 13 to Chapter 15 & chapter 22
Exam 4 (August 11th, Thursday): chapter 13 to Chapter 15 & chapter 22
Determination of your letter grade: your letter grade is based upon your score as
a percentage of the highest score in class. For example, if your weighted final score is 87
and the class highest is 95 then your ‘curved’ score is (87/95)*100= 91.6. After
calculation of ‘curved’ score letter grades are assigned according to the following table
