Overview
The combined CEO and Company Secretary role is an integral one within ALFA and the feedlot sector. It
entails the effective leadership and management of the organisation’s membership services, strategy, risk,
budgets, policy, staff & statutory responsibilities.
Key responsibilities of the role
 Represent the sector to Government, wider industry, media, customers, general public & other
stakeholders;
 Provide strategic direction, decision making and oversight of the levy funded industry programs and
projects delivered by service providers; Meat & Livestock Australia (ie R&D, and marketing), the National
Residue Survey (ie residue monitoring), and Animal Health Australia (ie biosecurity, animal health and
welfare);
 Provide leadership, management and input in the development, implementation and monitoring of
organizational and industry risk and strategy frameworks;
 Maximise membership through the provision of relevant and valuable services;
 Research, draft and implement policy developed by the organization to ensure the cattle feedlot industry
remains profitable and competitive whilst continually meeting community expectations;
 Act as secretariat to ALFA’s Executive, Research & Development, Marketing, Environment; and Feed
Commodities and Nutrition Committees.
 Manage all aspects associated with the employment, retention and training of staff;
 Manage the finances and reserves of the organization along with the development, implementation and
review of budgets and forecasts. Determine options to diversify and improve revenue generation and
mitigating expenditure;
 Manage all internal and external contracts undertaken by ALFA including with staff, auditors,
consultants, event managers, landlord, insurance providers, IT services etc;
 Manage all member services, conferences, workshops, administration and statutory accounting
responsibilities;
 Undertake company secretary functions for the organisation;
 Ensure ALFA meets its statutory obligations with respect to Corporations, Taxation, Workplace Health &
Safety and Competition law as well as its responsibilities within the industry Memorandum of
Understanding and Red Meat Advisory Council trust deed;
 Develop and disseminate Board agendas, minutes, actions and financial statements on a timely basis.
Organisational relationships
The CEO/ Company secretary role reports directly to the ALFA President and is responsible to the ALFA
Board as a whole.
The role has four direct reports as follows:
 Policy and Projects Manager
 Membership, Communications and Capability Officer
 Events Coordinator

Accounts and office administrator
The role also manages an external contractor who undertakes technical extension services on behalf of the
sector.
Limits of authority
The limits of authority associated with the role are defined by this position description and the
organisational Delegation of Authority document.
Key areas upon which job performance will be measured
 The effective management of organizational budgets, forecasts, finances and reserves;
 The accurate and timely completion and provision of financial and board related documentation;
 The professional completion of activities to maintain and improve industry’s standing within
Government, business and the general community;
 The successful implementation of agreed activities within ALFA’s strategic plan;
 The effective management of identified risks within ALFA and the feedlot industry;
 The number and proportion of ALFA members secured each year;
 The professionalism, activities undertaken and success of ALFA’s advocacy efforts;
 The effective management of ALFA’s statutory, Memorandum of Understanding and audit
responsibilities;
 Personal relationships with the President, the Councillors and the general members of the Association;
 The successful delivery, profits and feedback derived from ALFA’s conferences, workshops and training
activities.
Qualifications, Skills and Experience Required
 Strong understanding of agriculture and preferably the livestock sector;
 Proven high level management, leadership, strategy and financial experience;
 Excellent written and verbal communication, negotiation, interpersonal and team skills;
 Demonstrated policy and advocacy experience; and understanding of the legislative process;
 Extensive contacts within industry, industry service providers, agribusiness and Government;
 Strong organisational, time management and prioritisation capability;
 Excellent attention to detail;
 High professional standards and integrity;
 Ability to professionally represent ALFA;
 Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines;
 Ability to multitask and to work harmoniously in a small team environment;
 Competency in the use of Microsoft Office software applications.
