ALFA registers Energy Project before UN
- Innovative Project that reduces energy consumption and CO2 emissions
San Pedro Garza García, N. L., Mexico. May 19, 2008.- ALFA, S.A.B. de C.V. (ALFA), the leading Mexican
company, announced today it successfully registered before the United Nations an energy project (the
“Energy Integration Project”) belonging to its subsidiary company Petrotemex. The project was classified as
a part of the Clean Development Mechanism under the Macro Convention on Climatic Change.
Besides substantial savings in electricity consumption and the natural gas and fuel oil needed to generate it,
the project allows for an important reduction in emissions, equivalent to 260,000 metric tons of CO2 per year.
This way, it has become the most important project of its kind to obtain such registry in Latin America.
The Energy Integration Project is based on an advanced technological innovation developed by
Petrotemex’s engineers, who designed the changes required by the production process, and the equipments
needed to capture steam and other gases of low energy potential, which are generated by the same
process. They are then reused to produce electrical power. Never before such a project had been carried out
in Mexico, nor a turbo compressor of the necessary dimensions and characteristics had been made in the
whole world.
Dr. Juan Luis San José, ALFA’s Energy Director, remarked that: “the high level of innovation of the project,
coupled with the substantial reduction in CO2 emissions were the determining factors to obtain its registry
before the U.N. Today, more than half of Petrotemex’s electricity needs are generated internally.
Furthermore, the project allowed Petrotemex to ratify its status as a “Clean Company”, according to the
Mexican Environmental Ministry standards.”
The Energy Integration Project meant an investment in the order of U.S. $ 35 million in the two years it took
to be developed.
An additional benefit of obtaining the registry of the project is that it will allow ALFA to access funds through
the commercialization of the emission reduction in the Carbon Bonds market, according to the Kyoto
Protocol. This way, ALFA will have additional resources to continue developing other environmentally friendly
projects, in line with its philosophy of social responsibility.
ALFA is a Mexican company comprised of four business groups: Alpek (petrochemicals), Nemak (aluminum auto
components), Sigma (refrigerated food) and Alestra (telecommunications). ALFA is the world’s leading manufacturer of
high-tech aluminum engine heads and blocks. It is one of the world’s largest producers of PTA, a petrochemical product,
and has a leading market share in other petrochemicals in Mexico. In addition, ALFA is the leader in the production of
processed meats and cheese and one of the most important telecommunications service companies in Mexico. In 2007,
ALFA reported revenues of $106,833 million (U.S. $9.6 billion), including foreign sales of U.S. $5.2 billion, and assets of
$99,331 million (U.S. $9.1 billion). Currently, ALFA has manufacturing operations in 16 countries and employs more than
50,000 people. ALFA shares are quoted on the Mexican Stock Exchange and Latibex, the Latin American market in the
Madrid Stock Exchange.
