Principal’s Corner
Home and family environments have a major impact on children’s
educational achievements. As a parent, you can make your home educationally
stimulating and conducive to educational success. Here are some ways to help
promote education within your home.
Help your children create and keep schedules. Most people are more
productive if they set aside time for study, chores, work, and fun on a weekly
basis. Be sure the schedules you create and monitor are flexible enough to
allow tradeoffs and shifts when necessary. Make school work and other
learning experiences high priorities in your home schedules.
Set a good example for your children. Show your children that learning,
reading, and studying are important skills they will need throughout their lives.
Let them see you reading and doing quiet study work at the same time they are
studying or doing after-school work. Make items available in your home that
stimulate your children’s interest in learning. For instance, subscribe to
magazines suitable for their ages, interests, and reading skills.
Encourage your children to share information. Set aside some time for family
members to share something they have read or done in school. While you are
preparing the meal, eating, or cleaning up, encourage your children to talk
about school. Discuss what they are learning, any new ideas, or current events
they have recently studied. Ask questions, correct mistakes, and encourage
appropriate attitudes and behaviors; yet, be sure you are positive and
diplomatic.
By helping your children create and keep schedules, setting good
examples for appropriate behaviors, turning home experiences into learning
experiences, monitoring leisure activities, encouraging your children to share
their experiences, you can help promote education in your home.
MID-WINTER BREAK
Classes will be dismissed for the Mid-Winter break beginning
Monday, February 21st through Friday, February 25th. The building
will be closed for the entire week. School will resume Monday,
February 28th.

Three Cheers for our Harwood Service and Safety Helpers
Our Harwood Service and Safety Squads deserve our thanks and appreciation. They help
keep the students of Harwood safe, as well as making life for the lower elementary boys and girls
more relaxed. Besides the help they give, these students learn a sense of responsibility and a feeling
of pride in being able to contribute to their school. This helps to foster positive habits for all students
involved.
At times it may seem like a thankless job, but, we at Harwood want all the safety and service
helpers to know  we value the work each one performs.

Dress for the Season
I would like to remind parents and students that the full force of
winter is upon us. Children need to be dressed warmly for the trip to and
from school and also for noon recess. Dressing in layers is a good idea
because the temperature can fluctuate up to 20 degrees throughout the day.
Remember
boots, hats, gloves, snow pants, and scarves are
a must when cold days are upon us.
All students are expected to go outside for noon recess, weather permitting – only a doctor’s note
explaining a condition will keep a child inside. The decision to go outside at lunch is made at
about 11:00 a.m. each day. Factors affecting this decision are wind speed, temperature, the wind
chill index and sunshine. A general guide is that the children will be sent outside if the temperature
and/or wind chill index is 15 degrees or above

of the American
Education Week
Poster Contest
The posters that Elizabeth Prenkocevic,
Alana Asmar, Katie Auberle, Zoe Pritchard, and
Talene Sarkissian and their parents did were
selected to represent Harwood School in the
WCS American Education Week Contest. Their
posters were based on the theme “Public
Education: A Natural Treasure.”
They were honored by the WCS School Board, administrators, teachers, and
the Warren Education Association at the WCS Board Meeting on Wednesday,
December 1, 6:00 pm at Sterling Heights High School Performing Arts Center.
HARWOOD’S
NEW STAFF MEMBER
We would like to introduce our newest staff member, Scott Fryer. Mr. Fryer was
just hired by WCS as our new music/band teacher and will be working at both Hatherly
and Harwood Elementaries.
Mr. Fryer received his Bachelor Degree from Wayne State University in Music
Education and plays multiple instruments. During the first semester of this school year,
Mr. Fryer served as a long-term elementary music/band substitute in two other WCS schools.
We feel fortunate to have Mr. Fryer at our building and look forward to having him as a member of
the Harwood team.
Children in Videos/Newspaper Articles
Occasionally your child(ren) may be videotaped/photographed throughout
the school year at various school activities. This video may be replayed on
the school channel – Channel 6 in Sterling Heights or Channel 9 in Warren.
Also, pictures may be put in local newspapers. Please indicate in
writing to Mr. Keener if you do not want your child
viewed on our educational channels or their picture put
in newsletters/newspapers.

…But I don’t feel so good…
Many times students are being sent to school “not feeling good” and told if they don’t feel
any better they can call home or mom’s /dad’s work place. Students have been sick to their stomach
on the way to school, are running temperatures, continually coughing, complaining of a sore throat,
or just plain “don’t feel good.” If your child is not feeling well, and especially, running a
temperature, please do not send him/her to school. A child should be without a fever for 24
hours before coming back to school.
Mrs. Franklin’s MEDIA CENTER NEWS
Dear Harwood Parents,
The November Scholastic Book Fair was a success! Over $3,000 worth of books and
merchandise was sold enabling us to buy 111 beautiful library bound
books from Scholastic. I am currently in the process of cataloging and
labeling all the books which will soon be available for checkout. Thank
you for your support! The next book fair will take place in April. The
month of January was devoted to fairy tales in Media. The
Kindergarteners listened to variations of Cinderella, learned KidPix, and
rewrote a Cinderella story that the fifth graders illustrated using MS software programs
and KidPix. The First graders listened to different versions of the Gingerbread Man and
each child illustrated parts of the story. They took pictures of their work and the story
can be found on the media center website on Harwood’s home page. The Second
graders spent several weeks perfecting a reader’s theater play, Third grade made
character cards based on the Frog and the Prince fairy tale, and Fourth grade created
their own graphic novel of a fairy tale play.
Check out the Media Center website. It is still incomplete, but it gives information about
the media center, media center policies, and media classes. If you would like to
volunteer a few hours a week or a month in the media center, please contact me. Any
help with shelving, putting books in order, checkouts, etc… is greatly needed and
would be much appreciated.
Happy Winter!
