Each TWP product is custom formulated for a specific set of uses with great degrees of overlap of use between product lines. Each TWP product offers maximum protection from sunlight (UV), moisture absorption & loss, organic growth and general wood surface degradation. Most oil-based, pigmented TWP products are transparent for minimal hiding of the wood grain or maximum "grain reveal". Except for the 100 Series and original 300 Series TWP’s, all of the other TWP products are VOC compliant in California. Call FSC Coatings, Inc. for information & ordering: 800-579-8458. While standard in the SA-1000 and 300 & 300 Designer Series, the “Ultimate UV Technology” is available as an option for all other 300 & 300 QD Products. After over 12 years of development and scientific testing, we have determined that the “Ultimate UV Package” adds an incredible 30-60% of additional life and color retention to the life of the SA-1000, 300 & 300 QD systems – a monumental achievement. TWP Selection For Aged Wood Applications For aged wood, our TWP products with highly refined paraffin oils (200 Series TWP SHAKE & SHINGLE, 400 Series TWP Gold Label or 500 Series TWP) minimize cracking and cupping while offering the added dimensions of increased abrasion resistance and water repellency. The paraffin oil facilitates tremendous TWP penetration into the wood with 0.1"-1" penetration common on aged cedar or redwood. This oil presence deep in the wood helps "relax the wood fibers" by enabling the fibers to regain their original shape (rebulking the fiber). The only drawback to these paraffin based systems is slower dry which must be recognized when coating aged decks. TWP Gold Label is the common selection for new & aged decks; TWP 500 Series is commonly used on aged siding & fencing; and TWP Shake & Shingle is routinely used on shake & shingle roofs. The TWP Shake & Shingle performance is the strongest in the industry and is appropriately rated as the #1 wood roofing coating system by TEXAS A&M's famed Forest Products Lab with 15 years of testing to backup that ranking. If positive dry is required on aged wood, original TWP (100 Series) or TWP Deck & Furniture (300 Series) should be considered. Doors, wood windows, high traffic walking decks, outdoor furniture and boat decks are all candidates for these TWP systems with TWP Deck & Furniture being the highest performance alternative. In multiple coats, the TWP Deck & Furniture will develop a mar- resistant, high gloss, "varnish look" finish in a variety of stain colors. TWP Deck & Furniture lasts longer than any varnish available on the market today and is the recommended system for all hardwoods -- especially for wood doors and windows. Use of UH1000 Super Catalyst with the 300 Series will increase scratch resistance & hardness while decreasing dry times. The pigmented and clear SA-1000 Silicone Poly Plus with UH-1000 Super Catalyst are recommended as topcoats over 300 Series for door, window, boat and furniture where maximum finish quality and faster recoat times are desired. The SA-1000 Silicone Poly Plus can be used as a stand-alone system in multiple coats for furniture, doors, windows, cabinets and so forth. When catalyzed, the SA-1000 system can be used on floors, countertops, tabletops and similar applications with a satin or piano-quality gloss finish. New Wood Protection Alternatives For new wood, adding oil to re-bulk the wood fibers is not normally a major concern. Therefore, TWP Deck & Furniture (300 & 300 QD) and TWP (100 Series) are excellent choices for most new wood applications including decks, trim, doors, hardwood boat surfaces, furniture and siding applications. Prior to application, all surfaces must be scuff sanded to open the grain for penetration. TWP Deck & Furniture is very effective as a beautiful semi-gloss "varnish look" finish on hardwoods & softwoods alike -- new or aged. Recently reformulated, the cost effective, 100 Series TWP has a long, 20 year history of performance on a wide variety of applications with its real strength being siding and fencing uses. Also consider SA-1000 as topcoat with 300 Series TWP used for stain colors. 2 Semi-Transparent To Full Body Stain Needs If the heavier, pigmented look is desired, our Water-borne TWP W-100 Series is perfect. TWP W-100 Series is simply the finest semi-transparent and full body water-borne stain system made. With Mildew Sealer as a primer, TWP W-100 performs extremely well over old linseed oil stains that have turned dark from organic growth or when protecting extremely weathered surfaces. Approximately 60% of PIER 39's 80-100 year old wood siding was restored with the TWP W-100 system with no visible signs of chalk, organic growth or wear after over 10 years of exposure -- a real feat. This ultra-high performance system can be used in mild and tough environments -coastal, desert or mountain regions. Several standard wood tone colors are available including two grays and cedartone with tint bases available for store tinting. Custom batches can be made at the factory for 50+ gallon quantities. Works equally well on stucco and other masonry surfaces. TWP Use On Pressure Treated Wood TWP has been used successfully on a variety of pressure treated applications on a variety of woods. Generally, new pressure treated wood should be allowed to dry a couple of months followed by a good cleaning with Z-90 Wood Magic and power wash to remove excess surface salts & dirt. TWP Deck & Furniture (300 & 300 QD) is the best choice on these woods with regular maintenance. On aged ACZA & CCA species, original TWP, TWP Deck & Furniture and Water-borne TWP (W-100 Series) are all good choices with proper surface preparation, moisture content below 18% and priming with Mildew Sealer (in the case of W-100 Series). Pentachlorophenol treated woods should only be coated with TWP Deck & Furniture following proper cleaning (note: penta and solvent bleeding will occur through the finish for years). Recommendations for coating all types of pressure treatments (including fire retarded wood) are available from FSC Coatings. MAINTENANCE: An Easier Way One of the major benefits of the oil-based TWP systems is the easy maintenance when it's time to re-apply since there is no film to remove in most cases. Simply clean the wood of oil & dirt, allow to dry and re-apply the desired oil-based TWP system. Easy and inexpensive. Frequent surface cleaning of dirt and foreign material is beneficial. Note: The TWP Deck & Furniture will build a film in multiple coats but maintenance is still simple as long as done within recommended time window -- clean the surface, lightly scuff sand, reclean to remove the sanding residue and reapply only TWP D & F or SA-1000. Mildew Sealer And Bio-Seal: Primer/Sealers For Problem Substrates TWP Mildew Sealer is simply the highest performance acrylic primer for wood and masonry on the market today. TWP Mildew Sealer comes as clear or white allowing topcoating with any acrylic semi-transparent stain, full body stain, paint or elastomeric coatings. Mildew Sealer not only eliminates most organic growth, it also arrests peeling paint, binds chalk and improves adhesion of all acrylic coatings for maximum finish service life. Because of its superior physical strength and bond abilities, Mildew Sealer is routinely used as a primer/sealer for both acrylic floor paints & decking systems in addition to its normal sidewall uses. With proper surface prep, also works on aged galvanize, baked coatings & fiberglass. Great for bathrooms & other high moisture environments. See data sheet for application & use instructions. For extreme cases, use FSC’s Bio-Seal as in mold and fire remediation projects. Most re-occurring mildew problems originate from film-embedded mildew, which cannot be 3 completely removed by power-washing. This is a typical problem for aged linseed oil, vegetable oil or other plant extract resin-based finishes and coatings. The Mildew Sealer film is impervious to mildew and other forms of organic growth. The Mildew Sealer and its stain blocking sister product, 2-50 Super Prime Stain Blocking Primer, were used to prime the 80-100 year old siding on San Francisco's famed PIER 39. TWP Mildew Sealer works !!! Always use FSC’s BioCleaner to clean and loosen any organic growth prior to applying Mildew Sealer. The Water-borne TWP System (W-100 Series) is a perfect semi-transparent to full body stain system topcoat for Mildew Sealer primed surfaces. For surfaces to be painted, add 1 gallon of the acrylic topcoat paint to 5 gallons of TWP Mildew Sealer for added system opacity or better hide. For maximum paint system longevity, use the MaxLife System. Typically the MaxLife Ultra-High Performance Paint System will outlast other premium systems by 200-400%. BST-100 BIOSTRIP: One Biodegradable Stripper That Works BIOSTRIP is a fast acting, relatively safe paint stripper which contains no caustic, methylene chloride, alcohol, petroleum distillate or paraffin wax. BIOSTRIP works on most air dry finishes including acrylic latex, lacquers, wood stains and most alkyds. It has been used to successfully remove acrylic paints, stains and some varnishes for restoring the "natural wood look" in indoor and outdoor applications. Being very efficient in its use, BIOSTRIP generally covers 2-3 times the area of most methylene chloride and caustic strippers on a per gallon basis making it the most cost effective stripper we know of on the market today. BIOSTRIP does not raise the grain of the wood, which separates it from most strippers on the market. It has limited use in the removal of urethanes and epoxies. BIOSTRIP is a very powerful graffiti remover. In addition, BIOSTRIP removes many mastic-type flooring adhesives as used to lay carpet and tile as well as most oils and greases including transmission fluid from driveways and floors. BIOSTRIP can be cleaned up with water. With its citrus odor and low tendency to irritate skin, BIOSTRIP is the most user-friendly stripper on the market. BIOSTRIP works !!! Note: For some varnishes, oil stains, epoxies & urethanes, TakeOff Paint Stripper is recommended. Technical Notes & Tips: A) TWP 500 Series and TWP Shake & Shingle have slower dry times below 65 degrees F. Mix TWP (original) or TWP Deck & Furniture Stain with TWP II and TWP Shake & Shingle to increase penetration rate and reduce dry times. The UH-1000 Super Catalyst and special accelerators can be added to the 300 & 300 QD as well SA1000 to speed up cure at any temperature down to 50 degrees F. B) TWP, TWP 500, TWP Shake & Shingle and TWP Deck & Furniture Stain are compatible with each other (systems can be mixed together in the can). However, straight TWP Deck & Furniture and original TWP should not be applied over TWP Shake & Shingle or TWP II that is fresh (less than several years old). Likewise, TWP II and TWP Shake & Shingle should not be applied over TWP Deck & Furniture or original TWP applications showing full repellency intact. C) TWP Water-borne Acrylic is recommended for most sloped or vertical wood or masonry surfaces. For aged wood, use TWP Mildew Sealer or 2-50 Super Prime Stain Blocking primer for the following conditions: 1) chalk binding (all), peeling paint (all), organic growth prone areas (TWP Mildew Sealer), or wood where tannin migration is considered a potential problem (2-50 Super Prime). Do not use on "soft" or "punky" surfaces – must be on dry wood or stucco. Do not use where ponding water is a concern. Peel is possible in time on deck surfaces. D) For maximum life, "dipping" is the recommended new wood application method for all oil-based 4 TWP products. "Dipping" has been used on many projects -- large and small -- with outstanding success. Several church, U.S. Forest Service and Coast Guard projects have been protected this way with great success. Scuff sanding & cleaning wood with Z-90 Wood Magic Plus is necessary to open the grain, remove any mildew or mold and to increase absorbency & longevity – especially on smooth wood. E) Special new wood preparation procedures include scuff sanding new, smooth wood with abrasive pads & cleaning with Z-90 Wood Magic Plus (best procedure – must do for all hardwoods, Douglas Fir & smooth softwoods). TWP 300 & 300 QD are always the recommended stains in hardwood applications. Use SA-1000 Silicone Poly Plus for clear or transparent topcoat -- available also in satin. F) Clear coatings (no pigment) are not recommended for outdoor use without a pigmented topcoat - clears will allow the surface to gray and the finish to fail quicker. Most oil-based TWP colors are transparent for maximum "grain reveal" and minimum hiding of the wood grain making the use of clears unnecessary. When clear is demanded, consider SA-1000 with our proprietary “Ultimate UV Package”. TWP is a registered trademark of Amteco, Inc. All Technical Information & Sales: FSC Coatings, Inc.
