Each candidate must verify that they have two years’ full time experience or equivalent hours on a
part time basis, in the last ten years, in the required areas, as listed below.
In exceptional cases, candidates working at senior professional level and who can demonstrate
specialised knowledge in any of these areas with prior experience in the listed areas, will be eligible
for consideration for CIOB registration.
The information contained within this report must relate to you personally and the work you have
been responsible for. The template may not be expanded however, any candidate having the need
to provide further specific information in relation to their experience may submit additional separate
sheets, referenced within the template.
The portfolio of evidence must demonstrate and support the areas for which you are claiming
competence.
Use relevant examples to illustrate your understanding, competence and experience in each of
these areas.
A current and relevant CV to be submitted with portfolio.
Registration within the Faculty of Architecture and Surveying does not automatically give
entitlement to registration with the relevant Registration Board. The formal procedures for
registration, as laid down by the Registration Board in Ireland, must be followed and adhered
to.

a. Cost benefit analyses on various courses of action on a construction project
b. Demonstrate a working understanding of current methods and trends in construction

practice and ethics
d. Understand the role of the Quantity Surveyor in a multi-disciplinary team

1. MANAGEMENT COMPETENCE
a)
Management
Provide a number of examples of the principles and practices that demonstrate a thorough
understanding of the knowledge required by an individual seeking to register as a Quantity
Surveyor. Explain how your role and competence has evolved to equip you with key management
skills: e.g., implementation of client and/or employer brief, familiarisation of procurement strategies,
risk management, construction processes, information technology within business, report writing, and
forecasting, understanding of the principle methods of project planning, leadership, developing teams,
managing work quality, responsibility for others, managing resources and sharing knowledge.

b)
Measurement of Works Principles and Commercial Awareness,
Provide examples that demonstrate your competency: in the construction technology involved in
building and associated works; to prepare measurements for building works and other contract
documentation that clearly and concisely set out appropriate descriptions and work scopes for
building works packages or the like; to evaluate and report on tender or other bid documents leading
to the procurement and letting of contracts for works; to prepare or evaluate applications for
valuations and certificates of payments for works in progress and for the valuation of variations and
Final Accounts; in the knowledge and understanding of the principles and techniques used in the
preparation, submission and defence of claims for additional time and money; in the use of computers
and information technology in the various construction team disciplines; towards the potential
commercial impact of your decisions and actions.

c)
Construction Contract Practice, Understanding of Construction Law and
Dispute Resolution Procedures
Provide examples that demonstrate your awareness of the current industry standard contracts in use
and how risk is allocated therein between the parties; your awareness of how bespoke contracts can
allocate risk between the parties; your understanding of the obligations and responsibilities that may
be within the role of Quantity Surveyor (whether or not formally set out) in a construction contract;
your understanding of legal principles and professional ethics appropriate to your role and the various
methods available for the resolution of disputes and differences.
