00924 High Court Selection Exercise
Whom should I nominate as a referee?
Salaried judges will be asked to nominate one judicial referee and one personal
referee;
Judicial referees’ list*
Candidate’s Office
Referee
Deputy High Court Judge
Head of Division, or Judge in charge of the
specialist court where you sit most often.
Senior or Specialist Circuit Judge
The senior Presiding Judge on Circuit.
Circuit Judge or Recorder
Resident Judge, the Designated Civil Judge
or the Designated Family Judge in
the court(s) where you sit most often, or the
senior Presiding Judge on Circuit.
District Judge or Deputy District Judge
The relevant Senior District Judge or the
local Designated Civil Judge.
Tribunal judge or member
Your appraising judge.
* If you hold a judicial office not on this list, or if you are concerned that the listed individual has
insufficient knowledge of your work, please contact the JAC as to who to nominate as your judicial
referee.
Fee-paid judicial office holders will be asked to provide one judicial (from the above
list) and one professional referee
Professional referees’ list+
Candidate’s Profession/Post

Managing, senior, or relevant equity partner.
Barrister
Head of Chambers.
Head of Chambers
Former Head of Chambers.
Sole practitioner
A person with direct knowledge of the work
you do.
Other employment
Director, manager or equivalent.
+Not required for salaried judicial office holders
Practitioners referees’ list
If the requirement for judicial experience is waived for any of the posts, practitioners
will be asked to provide one professional referee (from the above list) and one
personal referee.
