However, an exception is made for areas of research supported by specialist funding agencies and, in particular, for medicine. Specific attention is paid to the reasons given by applicants in justifying their choice of the Trust as the most appropriate agency for the support of their project. International Network grants enable a Principal Investigator based in the UK to lead a research project where its successful completion is dependant on the participation of relevant overseas institutions. A significant research theme must be identified at the outset which requires international collaboration between one or more UK universities, and two or more overseas institutions. Networks should be newly constituted collaborations. The value of an award is normally up to £125,000, the activities involved lasting for up to three years. Closing date: Outline application: No deadline Invited full application: 1st December 2011 European Research Area in Ageing – Active and Healthy Ageing This call is dedicated to the achievement of enhanced and healthy ageing and, in particular, to address the major priority established by the AHAIP (Active and Healthy Ageing Innovation Partnership) of a 2 year increase in healthy life expectancy in the European Union by 2020. Twelve funders in nine countries have committed €4.2 million to fund research projects of up to three years. Applications are invited from multidisciplinary research groups representing 3 to 5 funding countries. The call has three objectives: Generate new knowledge on the biological, clinical, behavioural, social and environmental factors that enable individuals to live actively and healthily into later life. Explore comparatively different models, methods, approaches and good practices in societal responses to increased longevity which emphasise both social inclusion and sustainability. Engage in effective knowledge exchange activities that will assist European and other countries to achieve the goal of increasing healthy life expectancy by 2 years by 2020. Closing date: 3rd October 2011 Winston Churchill Memorial Trust – Travelling Fellowship 100 Travelling Fellowship awards are made annually for overseas travel of between 4-8 weeks. Applicants should describe the value of the partnership and its mutual benefits. Research Grants are suitable for focused research projects that may be short- or long-term in nature. Grants are normally awarded for 3 years. The New Investigator scheme assists early-career researchers - newly employed university lecturers and lecturer level equivalent fellows whose awards were secured in open competition to secure their first major element of research funding.
