PVCC Assessment Project Report Form 2004-2005 For each assessment project that division members are involved in, this form should be used to report to the Division Chair. Only one form need be submitted per individual or group project. The cells below can expand to accommodate additional text. DATE: 1-28-05 Title and Level of the Assessment Project (Institutional, Division, Program, Course, etc.): Evaluation of an Instructor-Created CD for COM 110 (Interpersonal Communication). This project focused on the “course-level.” Principal Coordinator/Contact and other Faculty Involved: Walt Thielen Learning Outcomes(s) Assessed (General Education, Division, Program, Course, etc.): The learning outcomes that were assessed were most closely aligned with the competencies at the course level. Description & Timeline of Assessment Activity, including specific tools for measuring/quantifying outcomes: The goal of this assessment project was to evaluate the effectiveness of a CD-ROM that was created by the instructor for use in the COM 110 Interpersonal Communication course for Fall 2004. This assessment focused on three sections of COM 110 (N=60 students). The CD contained ten in-depth Powerpoint self-paced presentations that reviewed key concepts for each of the ten chapters in the textbook. The assessment itself involved gathering students’ perceptions of the effectiveness of this CD via a questionnaire. The CD was distributed to all students on the first day of class and the questionnaire was administered the last day of the class. The questionnaire (below) involved nine items and asked students to respond on a Likert-scale by selecting one of five responses: A= very extensively, B= substantially, C=some, D=very little, and E=not at all/none. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. 9. To what extent did you use the CD that was created by Dr. Thielen? To what extent do you believe the CD helped you understand the book material? To what extent do you believe the CD helped your performance on the chapter quizzes? To what extent do you believe the CD influenced the quality of the chapter discussions? To what extent did you have technical problems with the CD on your computer? To what extent did the chapter quizzes motivate you to use the CD? To what extent do you believe the CD will help you retain long-term the basic principles from the textbook? To what extent do you believe the CD helped to make the textbook information more interesting? To what extent do you believe the CD should continue to be part of the course? 2004-2005 Assessment Project Report Form p. 1 Assessment Results (if any): The number of responses for each item are below: A= very extensively B= substantially C=some D=very little E=not at all/none. Recommended Interventions (if any): The results indicated the CD was effective and should continue to be a part of COM 110. The only item that suggested any possible form of intervention dealt with technical problems that some students experienced with the CD. Since students were using this CD on various computer platforms and systems, some technical problems were anticipated. While 70% of the students experienced no technical problems at all, the other students experienced technical problems of some sort. The only recommended intervention, at this point, is to identify specifically the possible source of these technical problems. Results of Interventions (if any): None at this time. 2004-2005 Assessment Project Report Form p. 2
