Admissions Requirements
All students must apply for admission to the teacher education program even if they have
already been admitted to the University. Undergraduates should apply no later than spring of
their sophomore year (or the fifth semester before their anticipated date of graduation) to insure
that graduation is not delayed. Applications should be submitted to the program to which
admission is being sought.
Application involves the following steps:

Meet with the Linguistic Undergraduate Director

Complete a 2-3 page professional statement addressing the factors that influenced your
decision to become a ESOL teacher.
The first part of your statement should be a brief personal history including role models, courses
and/or other learning experiences that have stimulated your interest in teaching and learning,
and any prior experience working with children.
The second part of your statement should identify one important issue in education and should
describe the different points of view represented in the debate surrounding this issue.
Suggested topics include, but are not limited to, inclusion, multicultural education, the No Child
Left Behind Act.
The third part of your statement should include your own educational philosophy and the type of
educator you aspire to become.
