(120 Hours)
PURPOSE: This course is the New Jersey
Firefighter I course. With a combination of
classroom and hands-on participation, the new
firefighter candidate will master the basic tasks of
firematics. A written and a proficiency exam will
be given at the end of the course.
A passing grade of 70% is required by the state.
CONTENT: Some topics covered are Right-toKnow; safety; fire behavior; chemistry of fire;
SCBAs; ventilation; forcible entry; water supply;
hose and nozzle handling; salvage and overhaul;
sprinklers;
communications;
portable
fire
extinguishers; knot tying; ICS-100 and rope
rescue.
100 percent attendance of all classes is required to
receive a certificate of completion.
A schedule of lessons, noting locations and equipment
needed, will be handed out on the first session.
Two (2) separate Firefighter I courses will be presented
this semester.

This course, through lecture and
workshops, will explain how to properly develop fire
streams for a safe and effective pumping operation. Fire
hydraulics are discussed in simplified terms so that the
student will be able to calculate hose sizes of 1 ½“ through
5” at the conclusion of the course.

and pressurized sources; dual, tandem, relay pumping;

OPERATIONS
(7 Hours)
PURPOSE: Fire ground operations are divided
into two distinct functions. The engine company
is responsible for providing adequate water
supply, operating attack line, rescue, and other
goals and objectives as dictated by the incident.
CONTENT: The course will cover the basic
information with regards to: water supply; fire
extension; master streams; fire protection systems;
specific hose attack problems; rescue problems;
and overhaul. This will be a full day of fire
ground operations.

SQUAD COMPANY OPERATIONS
(11 Hours)
PURPOSE: This course presents three classroom hours and six practical hours of Squad Company operations.
In the practical portion students rotate through seven stations using tools in practical simulations.
CONTENT: This course will consist of: The use of the Circular Saw for Roof cutting; Students will practice
cutting/pulling flat roof simulations with asphalt shingles using the K950 saw with a wood cutting blade. Metal
cutting; Students will practice cutting heavy sheet steel and re-bar using the K950 saw with a metal cutting blade.
Power-Assisted forcible entry of padlocks will also be reviewed and practiced. Concrete cutting; Students will
practice cutting plain concrete scrap and concrete block with the K950 saw using a composition blade (dry cut)
and a diamond blade with hose-line assist (wet cut). The student will practice a variety of Striking and Prying
evolutions using a full size door and padlock forcible entry mock-ups. Utility Control-Gas, Students will
practice the control of gas utility meter shut-off valves with a pipe wrench, Halligan Bar fork end or Fire
Department tool with a utility key end. Utility Control-Water, Students will practice the control of water
utilities by operating water meter shut off valves and water service curb stop valves with a utility key or a Fire
Department tool with a utility key end. The Control of Electrical Utilities will be briefly discussed. Nozzles
and Appliances, Piercing Nozzle; Students will practice deploying and operating the piercing nozzle through
various surfaces (i.e. car fender, hay bale, plywood roof hatch, etc.). Bresnan Distributor; Students will practice
breaching a floor/roof simulation and deploying and operating the Bresnan Distributor and shut off.

introduction to the rope equipment and knots used
for technical rescue programs such as Rigging for
