Lesson Study Project
The Lesson Study process includes the following:
- selecting an appropriate problem
- creating a lesson plan
- teaching preliminary lesson
- meeting with partner to discuss preliminary lesson
- teaching secondary/revised lesson
- recommendations/lessons learned
Each step in this process should be accompanied by a short (1-3 page) write-up. Your
final write-up should be the combined write-ups of each of these steps. A good idea is to
use each of these steps as headings for your Lesson Study final write-up. In the write-up
of your problem selection, be sure to give a rationale for the problem that you chose.
Also, discuss the mathematical attributes of the problem as well as predicted student
responses. In your lesson plan, be sure to include the standards you plan to address as
well as the goals of the lesson. In your write-up of your partner meeting, make sure to
present the issues that you discussed and the decisions/revisions you made as a result of
the mathematics learning that happened during the preliminary lesson. In the write-ups
of your primary and secondary teaching experiences make sure to include actual
examples from the classroom. Make sure to discuss what you learned about your
students’ mathematical understanding, misunderstandings and development. Your final
recommendations should summarize your experience. As well they should give
recommendations for those who will teach this problem in the future.
Video-taping:
It is recommended, but not required that you videotape your 1st and 2nd lessons. If this is
not possible, please do audio-record the lessons so that you will have a record of the
lessons. We will discuss methods of video and audio taping in class.
