1. Introduction
The Cultural Division of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office (TECO) in Canada is pleased to
announce the Taiwan Studies Grant Program for Canadian Scholars for the year 2009.
This grant, sponsored by the Ministry of Education of Taiwan, is designed to encourage Canadian
academics in universities and colleges or in research institutions to undertake research projects on
Taiwan, or on various aspects of Taiwan’s relations with Canada.
The object of this grant is to enhance Canadian scholars' understanding of Taiwan by establishing
directs contacts with Taiwanese academics in the same field and/or by conducting field work in
Taiwan. The grant will cover international airfare and a per diem. It is mandatory for all recipients of
this grant to travel to Taiwan.
2. Research Fields
Grants may be awarded for research in any of the following categories:
(1) Subject areas in sciences, social science and humanities that focus on:
- Asia Pacific Economic Co-operation with an emphasis on Taiwan and Canada ;
- Regional security in the Asian Pacific area and implications for Taiwan and Canada ;
- Cultural pluralism in Canada and Taiwan
(2) Taiwan Studies or Taiwan-Canada comparative studies
(3) Taiwan's relations with Canada
3. Eligibility
Applicants must:
(1) be full-time members of the academic staff of a recognized institution of higher education or
equivalent degree-granting institution; or
(2) be scholars at a research and policy planning institution that undertakes significant
Taiwan-Canada bilateral-relations research projects; or
(3) hold a degree equivalent to a postgraduate qualification; applications will be considered from
applicants without these formal qualifications only if he/she demonstrates successful research
experience;
(4) basic skills in Mandarin Chinese is an asset.
4. Restriction
Past recipients of this grant are not eligible to re-apply
5. Benefits
The benefits of the grant include an air ticket allowance (one time only) up to CAD 2,200 and a per
diem of US$200 up to a maximum of three weeks (including arrival and departure date) during the
grantee's stay in Taiwan.
6. Number of Grants
Two grants will be awarded to conduct research projects from May 1, 2009 to October 31, 2009

7. Terms and Conditions
Grants to successful candidates will be awarded in accordance with the following conditions:
(1) The applicant must personally apply in writing for a grant and must carry out his/her own
research, which is neither part of contractual or commissioned research, nor part of his/her
formal program of studies leading to a degree;
(2) It is the responsibility of the applicant to identify a Taiwanese counterpart and to make all
arrangements related to the implementation of his/her research project including:
- international travel
- accommodation and travel within Taiwan
- medical insurance while in Taiwan
- visit plans, including inter alia appointments with Taiwan's academics and other resource
persons, access to libraries and other study centres, etc.
(3) While in Taiwan, a grantee may be invited to give one or two lectures.
(4) Upon completion of the project and no later than October 31, 2009, two copies of the manuscript,
of publishable quality and the length of a normal scholarly journal article, plus one copy of the
manuscript on a computer disk, produced as a result of the research project, must be sent to the
Cultural Division of TECO along with a summary in English. Failure to provide such a
manuscript and computer disk in time will result in the forfeiture of the final payment of the
grant.
(5) One copy of the manuscript will be sent by the Cultural Division of TECO to the Ministry of
Education in Taiwan for possible onward transmission to the National Central Library in Taiwan.
The second copy will be retained by the Cultural Division of TECO. The manuscript will also
be available on TECO's website.
(6) The applicant must make every reasonable attempt to use the grant to publish the research article
on Taiwan. While not a condition of an award, sharing of the results in other fora, such as
conferences and seminars, is encouraged.
(7) The rights to the manuscript will remain the exclusive property of the researcher. When it is
published, the researcher will provide two copies of the article and the related information on
computer disk to the Cultural Division of TECO which is to be held as described above and to be
made available on their website

9. Selection and Notification
All applications will be peer reviewed by a pre-selected jury established by the Cultural Division of
TECO. The jury will include representatives of the academic community, research institutions and
other organizations with expertise in Taiwan Studies.
Criteria used to select qualified candidates are:
(1) academic excellence of the proposal;
(2) relevance of the proposal to the body of literature in the chosen field and the development of
Taiwan Studies;
(3) feasibility of the research project;
(4) likelihood of publication in the scholarly press upon completion.
Following the review of applications and the recommendations made by the pre-selected jury, the
Ministry of Education in Taiwan will make the final decision. Upon receiving the decision from the

Ministry of Education of Taiwan, the Director of the Cultural Division of TECO will notify the
successful applicants in writing.
10. Payment and Procedure
Successful applicants will be sent a Grant Agreement detailing the benefits and conditions of the
grant which must be signed and returned to the Cultural Division of TECO within thirty days to
ensure that the grant will be made.
Successful applicants must notify the Cultural Division of TECO their travel date 30 days prior to
departure so that arrangements can be made to provide the first installment (65%) at that time.
Once the project is completed and when the Cultural Division of TECO has received the related
manuscripts and information on a computer disk, which must be submitted no later then October 31,
2009, the remaining 35% of the grant will be paid.
