Activities with the Fellows (See Objectives that follow below): A. Laboratory - Gross and microscopic pathologic case sign outs including review of teaching and research specimens and external referrals. B. Teaching - Preparation of PowerPoint teaching and research presentations including posters and interactive teaching of Elective Medical Students. C. Research supervision - Presentations at academic meetings including a large number of prize winners and preparation of peer reviewed publications (See Sections on Publications and Presentations). Objectives of the Ophthalmic Pathology Research Fellowship: I. Learning to Organize and Run the Ophthalmic Pathology Laboratory under Dr. Brownstein’s Supervision: The fellow learns the day to day operation of the ophthalmic laboratory including the gross processing and histopathological examination of the ocular specimens from the greater Ottawa area and the Province of Saskatchewan as well as other external consults all of which are signed out by our ophthalmic pathology staff after thorough review of each case by the fellow, who thus develops his diagnostic expertise. These studies include learning gross photography, photomicroscopy, immunohistochemical techniques, and electron microscopy, all of which augment our academic and patient care endeavors. The end result is to provide the optimum care to our patients in a learning atmosphere while aiming for research opportunities arising from our careful and thorough pathological examinations, which we frequently correlate with the clinical findings. II. Teaching Ophthalmic Pathology: The fellow participates in our teaching program in ophthalmic pathology in conjunction with Dr. Brownstein. This includes predominantly the Elective Medical School Students, Seymour BROWNSTEIN, MD FRCSC 11 who rotate through our Ophthalmic Pathology Laboratory for one morning each week all year around during their 1 to 2 week elective rotation in Ophthalmology. During this time they are instructed on the normal detailed anatomy and histology of the eye and on a number of common and important pathological conditions (e.g. melanoma, retinoblastoma, various corneal conditions, and orbital tumours). The fellow also participates in the organization and partial presentation of Dr. Brownstein’s interactive didactic lectures with the residents and ophthalmic medical technology students which occur on a regular monthly basis at the University of Ottawa. Amongst the highlights of the academic year are the Ophthalmology Department’s Grand Rounds where the fellow has the opportunity to fully participate and present his interesting clinical pathological research cases to the entire Department, usually in early December of each year for 1-hour, which much of thus material going on to peer-review publications. The fellow also is invited to participate in all the academic activities of both the ophthalmology and pathology departments of the University of Ottawa and usually partakes in professor rounds, teaching conferences, and Journal Club for several hours weekly. III. Research: The fellow has the opportunity to participate in a large variety of clinical and basic science research projects, including earning on many occasions the first authorship. My publication list demonstrates the diverse topics that we have been researching including several collaborative studies with many of the subspecialists in our Department as well as from other Departments and Universities. The majority of our fellows co-author several manuscripts, obtain funding for their research usually through our Department’s Medical Research Fund, and present their Research studies to at least one major research conference, most frequently the internationally attended and acclaimed Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO) Meeting in Fort Lauderdale, Florida in early May each year. The fellow also presents their Research studies at the Research Day of both Departments with 77 % (17/22) of the fellows having been awarded the prize for the best paper for that year of training. Overall we provide a very diversified and stimulating year with many research opportunities, which should augment the future career of our fellows, whether they decide to devote themselves to academic ophthalmology or pathology, another subspecialty fellowship, or general ophthalmologic or pathologic practice. The vast majority of the fellows match (with CaRMS) into the specialty of their choice in highly respected institutions, almost always ophthalmology, immediately following the fellowship year. Furthermore, two-thirds of the fellows subsequently obtain additional post-residency subspecialty training, which adds to their academic and clinical repertoire. Our funded fellowship position is highly respected by the major academic and clinical University centers, both nationally and internationally, thus opening the prospect for further training and the eventual recruitment of our fellows to their desired academic and social milieu.
