ST PAUL’S CATHEDRAL PRESS NOTICE 21 June 2005 Kofi Annan to speak at St Paul’s Cathedral on first day of G8 summit UN Secretary General Kofi Annan will challenge world leaders to tackle global poverty when he speaks at St Paul’s Cathedral before travelling to Gleneagles for the G8 summit. On Wednesday 6 July at 6.30pm Mr Annan will deliver a keynote address at a debate entitled ‘Global Poverty: A Challenge to the G8’ where he will report on progress on the eight Millennium Development Goals to halve global poverty by 2015, and spur G8 members to commit themselves to meeting this challenge. Responses will be made by the Rt. Revd and Rt. Hon Richard Chartres, Bishop of London, Paul Myners, Chairman of Marks and Spencer, Wahu Kaara of the All Africa Council of Churches and Alison Marshall of CAFOD. The event - Mr Annan’s only London engagement during the G8 summit is the first in St Paul's Cathedral's autumn programme ‘Global Poverty: What Can One Person Do? Engaging with the Millennium Development Goals.’ The debate is organised by the St Paul's Institute, the Cathedral's forum for ethics, in partnership with the Department for International Development and in collaboration with the UN Millennium Campaign and Make Poverty History. ‘Global Poverty: A Challenge to the G8’ will be held at St Paul’s on Wednesday 6 July at 6.30pm.
